For most people, their family members are the most important people in their lives, while for others their friends are the ones they rely on. In my opinion, family is more important than friends.

In the first place, it's fair to say that family is for life while friends come and go. While you're at school, for example, you might think you will always be close to your best friends. Then, however, you might go to different colleges and soon lose touch. On the other hand, you will always have a connection with your family.

Also, your family members are the ones that know you the best, and are therefore better able to help you when you have problems. You might think that you are closer to your friends, but the truth is that the people you grew up with will always know you better.

All in all, I believe that friends and family play different roles in a person's life, but when it comes down to important matters, your family members are the ones who you can rely on.

We couldn't see the smoke coming from the forest when we started our hike. In fact, there was not even a cloud in the sky. I was glad my friend Ted and I decided to go on a hike on such a beautiful day.

After around an hour walking through the hilly forest, I suddenly started to smell something. Then, we saw a group of deer running past us, as if they were trying to escape from something. It was at that point that we first saw the flames. A fire had broken out in the forest! We immediately started running away, but after a few minutes we came to the edge of a wide deep river. It looked like there was no escape as the flames were getting closer.

Then, up above, we heard a helicopter. It was one used by the fire brigade. We waved frantically and fortunately they saw us and saved us. We felt so relieved to have escaped from such a deadly fire. It was certainly the most memorable hike that we've ever done!

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of waiter in Free Time Restaurant. I hope you will agree that I would be a very suitable addition to your staff.

I have a lot of experience in the food and catering business. I have worked as a waitress in my uncle's café for the last four summers. There, my responsibilities included bringing customers their orders as well as processing transactions on the till. Also, I spent a month working as the assistant to a chef in a restaurant in London. There, I learnt a lot about food preparation.

I also have a personal interest in food. I greatly enjoy trying out new recipes and cook for my family regularly. Also, I like to collect cookbooks with recipes from different countries.

All in all, I believe I am a very strong candidate for the position. Please contact me about an interview at your convenience.

Yours sincerely,

Rebecca Franks

No trip to Dublin, Ireland is complete without a visit to Trinity College, the home of the Book of Kells. This ancient masterpiece was written in the 8th century and is the inspiration for The Secret of Kells, an animation film that was released in 2009.

This Irish film tells an imaginary story about how the Book of Kells was created. The main character is Brendan, a curious 12-year-old boy who is learning how to write books in a monastery. One day, a talented writer called Aidan comes to the monastery with an unfinished book. His eyesight is getting worse, so someone must help him finish the book. Brendan sets out to find the `Eye of Collum-Cille'. It's a special magnifying glass that Aidan needs, but Brendan must be brave and clever to find it.

The Secret of Kells is a beautiful film that was nominated for an Academy Award in 2010. True fans of animation will love the hand-drawn graphics. Also, the voice acting, with Evan McGuire as Brendan, is excellent. It's a fun and educational film for all the family!

The air pollution in Fleetwood has reached very dangerous levels. It is common to see smog in the skies over the city, and who knows what effect this is having on the city's citizens and the surrounding environment. It's time to do something about this problem.

Firstly, one suggestion could be to expand the use of public transport in the city. For example, we could introduce new bus lines that go to areas in the city that don't have any public transport. This would mean more citizens would leave their cars at home, lessening the amount of exhaust fumes emitted by vehicles in the city.

Another idea could be to encourage carpool schemes. For instance, there could be a carpool lane on roads, or we could provide free parking for people who carpool. By doing this, more people would give lifts to their neighbours and friends, and the number of cars on the roads would be reduced.

All in all, by expanding the use of public transport and encouraging carpool schemes, we could really make a difference in reducing air pollution in our city.

Hi Jason,

Thanks for coming to me for advice. I sympathise with your problem - I also don't like speaking in public, but I got over my fear and so can you.

First, I think you should remember that you're only going to speak in front of family members. You won't be speaking to strangers, so you should relax as no one will mind if you make a few mistakes. If you still feel nervous, make sure to prepare well. Have notes with the information you want to talk about. And on the evening before, I find it helps to stand in front of a mirror and practise giving the speech. This will make you feel more comfortable on the day.

I know it's not easy to speak in public, Jason, but if you follow my advice, I'm sure you'll do fine. Write back to me to tell me how it went.

All the best,

Ralph

Dear Brian,

I'm glad that you plan to go abroad on holiday this year. You deserve the break! Personally, I would recommend that you go to Dublin in Ireland. You won't be able to sunbathe on a beach, but it's the perfect destination for a city break.

Firstly, there's so much to see there. There are lots of interesting museums to visit, such as the National Museum and the Dublin Writers Museum. Also, you can visit Trinity College in the centre of the city where you can see the Book of Kells, one of the world's oldest books! And Dublin is a great destination for shopping! You can get great deals on clothes and souvenirs in Grafton Street, and Nassau Street is famous for its many bookshops.

All in all, I think you'll have a great time in Dublin. If I were you, I'd book my flights today!

Take care,

Wendy

These days, many people of all ages join gyms. Gyms offer a lot of benefits, particularly for people in urban areas, but are there any negatives of joining a gym?

Firstly, gyms offer a variety of equipment, which can help you meet your fitness goals. For instance, you can use machines that exercise particular muscles. Also, gyms usually have trainers who can tell you how to use the equipment properly. They could also motivate you to exercise more and even give you a workout plan.

On the other hand, gyms can be expensive. Membership is often very costly, particularly for gyms in highly-populated areas. Also, gyms can sometimes get boring. Exercising in the same rooms and using the same equipment every day can get very tedious, which might cause you to lose interest in exercising in general.

All in all, while gyms can be expensive and boring, I believe that the equipment and expertise they provide are very important. Exercising at home just wouldn't be as productive and might even cause you an injury.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing with regard to the advert posted on your website for an assistant at your day camp. I am interested in applying for the position.

I am 18 years old and I just completed my A levels in Maths, English and Psychology. I will be starting a degree in Education at Leicester University in September. Last Summer, I worked at a community pool as a swim instructor for children from the ages of 7-12. I really enjoyed teaching the children. During the previous school year, I worked as a babysitter for various friends and neighbours. I consider myself hardworking and friendly. I am also very creative and enjoy working with and teaching children.

I would be grateful if you would consider my application for the position of camp assistant. Please find enclosed my CV and a letter of reference from my previous employer. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Tina Bradshaw

Many people, today, prefer to live in big cities. However, is life in the big city really the right choice?

There are some obvious advantages to living in a big city. In the first place, it is very convenient with lots of shops and services close by. This means it's easy to find what you need or want to do with little effort. Also, there are many opportunities available in a big city. For one thing, there are a variety of employment and educational choices for people who live in cities.

On the other hand, big cities do have a number of disadvantages. Firstly, they are very crowded, which can lead to health problems. For example, living with lots of people in a big city can cause stress. Furthermore, cities are more dangerous than smaller communities since they usually have higher crime rates. As a result, people living there are more likely to become victims of crime.

All things considered, in spite of the problems, I believe big cities have so much more to offer to the people living there. As long as you lead a healthy lifestyle and take care in the street, they are certainly the best place to live.
