Dear Emma,

I am writing to you from Costa Rica where I am spending my summer holiday volunteering for a local environmental group here, called `Earth Justice'. We are planting endangered trees in a protected area of forest and also introducing some rare, native frog species back into the forest.

The other volunteers are great. We have a very funny boy in our group who keeps us all laughing during the day. Our team leader is energetic and so friendly. He made us all feel very welcome when we arrived.

I really love it here. The work is physically hard sometimes, but it is so rewarding. And I am making friends from all over the world.

I will write again soon.

Take care,

Chloe

Dear Lyn,

Hi! How are you? I'm writing to give you an idea for the fancy dress party.

I think you should dress up as Gwyneth Paltrow. She is very beautiful and I like her style. I also think that you look like her a bit so you won't have to do much work. First of all, you will need a wig. Your hair is short and dark and Gwyneth has straight, long, blond hair. You will also need to put on some make-up. Gwyneth likes wearing earth colours like pink and brown. She loves dressing in fashionable clothes. She is very slim and likes jeans, khaki trousers and simple but trendy tops. When she goes to awards and special ceremonies she wears elegant dresses with high heels and lovely accessories.

I have a dress that I can lend you that looks just like the one that Gwyneth wore last year. I also have a pair of high-heeled shoes that you can borrow if you like.

Call me later and we can discuss it some more.

Speak to you soon!

Tammy

As soon as I opened my eyes I knew something was wrong. I looked at the clock and saw it was 9 o' clock! Oh no! I was going to be late for school. Why hadn't my alarm gone off? I quickly jumped out of bed and got dressed. It was strange that there was no one around.

I ran down the street as fast as I could and jumped on the bus. The bus dropped me off outside school, but there was nobody there.

It was then I noticed that the school gates were locked!

“What are you doing here?” a man shouted. “Why is the school locked?” I asked. “It is usually locked on Saturdays!” laughed the man. No wonder my parents hadn't woken me up. It was the weekend!

When I finally returned home at lunchtime, my family all laughed at me. I felt so silly and I had wasted a whole Saturday morning as well!

These days nearly all teenagers own a mobile phone. Some people believe that mobile phones are a useful thing for young people to have; however, others think they are not responsible enough to own one.

It is true that there are advantages to teenagers owning a mobile phone. Firstly, parents can contact them easily if they need to know where they are. Furthermore, a mobile phone provides security for the teenager. By that I mean that if they get into a dangerous situation, they can call for help immediately.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages as well. To start with, teenagers can be irresponsible and they might run up big bills that they can't pay. In addition, there are many news reports about the possible health risks that using a mobile phone may cause.

To sum up, I believe that teenagers should be allowed to have a mobile phone as long as they use it in a responsible way.

Dear Kate,

How are you? I hope you are well. I am writing to tell you about a new CD that I bought. It's absolutely great!

It's the new album by The Arctic Monkeys. It is very good and all my friends really like it. The music is like a cross between punk, funk and rock. The album is called `Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not'.

Most of the songs on the album are very fast and loud. The singer is really good and so are the guitars. The whole thing sounds very lively. It's been a long time since new music was this good. Oh, and the lyrics are wonderful! My favourite song is the eleventh on the album called `When The Sun Goes Down'.

If you haven't heard this album, then get it now! It's one of the best albums out today. Don't miss it!

Love,

Lea

Last weekend I went to a great Halloween party. It took place at my best friend Jim's house. All our schoolmates were there.

Bob and Alice arrived at Jim's wearing the most fantastic costumes. Alice was dressed as a fairy and wore a beautiful mask which had been painted by her artist mother. Bob wore a great Harry Potter costume.

We danced for hours and then at midnight we turned off the lights to watch the fireworks. Suddenly we heard a funny noise and saw this ghost coming towards us. Some people started screaming. It was only when we switched on the lights that we realised it was our friend Matt dressed up as a ghost acting silly.

We all laughed and felt rather silly for falling into Matt's trap. Afterwards we had a costume competition. Needless to say Matt's costume won the first prize!

Dear Mrs Saunders,

I am writing to apply for the position of weekend shift worker at Saunders Supermarket as advertised in the Evening Standard yesterday.

I am a seventeen-year-old student. I am currently studying for my A levels at St Francis school. I have some experience as I worked as a weekend assistant in a clothes shop last summer.

I am friendly and polite, which I believe are necessary qualities for dealing with customers. I am also hard-working, reliable and very well-organised.

I hope you will consider me for the job and I would be happy to attend an interview. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Emma Dane

I Suggested Answer

Nowadays, more and more homes are being burgled. Many studies show that burglaries have gone up a great deal. What can we do to prevent this?

A useful suggestion would be to start a neighbourhood watch scheme in cooperation with the police. Local police could organise the scheme by training their staff and locals.

It would also be a good idea for residents to label items and valuables at home so they can be found if stolen. Another suggestion is to organise community patrols around the neighbourhood.

There are many ways to prevent burglaries. Get involved in a neighbourhood scheme and make our cities safer.

Dear Joanne,

Hope you are feeling better. Thanks for sharing your problem with me.

You shouldn't feel anxious about the way you look or behave. You should value yourself and focus on your good qualities. You are a beautiful and intelligent young woman. You are caring and kind and you are always there for your friends when they need you. You also have a lovely family who loves you and supports you. What else could one ask for?

I think you must take action immediately and start thinking about your good qualities. Go out and meet your friends, do things that you enjoy. Be good to yourself and be grateful for what you have. Don't just sit there feeling miserable.

It'd be great if you could come and visit me in London sometime soon. I promise we'll have a great time. Write back soon with your news.

Lots of love,

CamillaTEST 5 B (Module 5)

J Suggested Answer

Introduction

The aim of this report is to present the results of a survey in which 200 pupils were questioned about their eating habits.

Food

Fifty percent of pupils prefer buying lunch from the school's canteen, whereas twenty percent prefer to buy snacks from the vending machine. Only five percent bring a packed lunch from home.

Drinks

Fizzy drinks are very popular among pupils. Twenty percent of the pupils have more than one fizzy drink per day. Only five percent prefer water and fresh orange juice.

Conclusion

To sum up, a large number of pupils prefer to have junk food and fizzy drinks instead of home-cooked meals and water or fresh fruit juice. I believe that the school should take action to promote healthy eating in the school. Vending machines should be banned and healthier options should be made available in the canteen.

I Suggested Answer

Dear Lucy,

How are you? Hope you are feeling better. I have some advice for you about getting fit and losing weight.

If you want to get fit you should exercise for 30 minutes every day. You don't have to go to the gym. You can cycle or walk to work if you like. As for losing weight, you should eat a balanced diet.

On the other hand, you shouldn't eat between meals. You should also try to eat more vegetables and fruit instead of unhealthy snacks. Also, it would be a good idea to stop eating junk food and drinking fizzy drinks. Fizzy drinks are really fattening. Fresh orange juice and water are much healthier options.

Well, I hope that helps. Let me know how you get on.

Lots of love,

Caroline
