Digestion flow chart rummy |
TEACHERS NOTES
AIMS
The key items practised by this activity are:
The order of the digestive tract
Technical words - oesophagus, stomach, enzyme, etc.
MATERIALS
A flow chart (this covers two sides of A4)
A set of 12 cards, half the cards have parts of the digestive tract on them (stomach, small intestine, etc.), the others have a description of the process in each part of the tract NB there are two versions of these cards, at two different levels of difficulty
PREPARATION
Print out/photocopy the flow chart on to light card and, if possible, fix the two pages together - you will need one flow chart for each pupil/student or team that is doing the activity.
Print out/photocopy the appropriate sheet of small cards and cut them up (or ask the pupils/students to cut them up!!!) - you will need one set of cards for each learner or each team that is doing the activity.
ACTIVITY 1
Learners cooperate together to put the small cards on to the flow chart.
ACTIVITY 2
This is a game for two teams (or up to four individual players).
Each team/player has a flow chart.
Shuffle all the small cards together and put them in the middle of the table.
Teams/players take it in turn to take a card and read out the statement on it. They must then put it on their flow chart in the right place.
If a team/player picks up a card they have already got on the flow chart they must put it to the bottom of the pile and miss a go.
The first person to fill all the blanks on their flow chart is the winner.

VERSION 1 (more difficult version)
Mouth |
This is where we start to break down food. We use our teeth to cut and chew food into small pieces. |
Oesophagus |
This is the tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach. It is made of muscle which squeezes the food into the stomach. |
Stomach |
This is a bag-shaped organ where food is churned around and broken down into smaller pieces. There are some enzymes here to break down the food. |
Small intestine |
This is the place where enzymes from the pancreas break down the food to even smaller pieces and the food is absorbed into the blood. |
Large intestine |
This is the organ that stores the parts of the food that we cannot absorb. Only water and vitamins are absorbed here. |
Rectum and anus |
These form the last part of the digestive tract. It is where stools are passed out of the body when we go to the toilet. |
VERSION 2 (a simpler version)
Mouth |
We chew our food in our mouths to make it small. |
Oesophagus |
The food goes down the oesophagus into the stomach. |
Stomach |
The stomach makes the food even smaller. |
Small intestine |
In the small intestine the food gets smaller and goes into our blood. |
Large intestine |
The large intestine takes water out of the food. |
Rectum and anus |
Stools come out of our anus when we go to the toilet. |
