1. Czy możemy przyjechać do was na wakacje?
24, Wellington Street Bolton
24th May 2000
Dear Brenda,
Thank you very much for your nice letter and the invitation.
It would be really nice for us to come to you. Mark and Jenny are really happy about spending holidays at your place. They think it would be great to swim and surf in the sea. They love it!
If you don't mind we will come to you at the beginning of July. Steve has scheduled to have his three-week holiday in July. They had to decide about the approximate dates of holidays in the firm in January.
Is there anything you would like us to bring you? We will come by plane, but we still don't know the exact date of our arrival.
Our best wishes to you both.
Lea

Dear Mag,
It was really nice to have you all here in Poland. I hope you enjoyed your stay. It is good especially for the children to learn something about the country their grandparents come from. They learnt some Polish here, but of course they will forget nearly everything soon if they have no contact with Polish every day. If we meet next year as agreed, it will be much easier to speak the language.
In Poland it is getting colder and colder. The kids started their school and we went back to work. I don't work at the weekends but Mark works almost every Saturday. It is not so bad for me because I can do my housework undisturbed.
On Saturday evenings we very often go to see our friends. Most of them have children the same age as ours, so we take Ann and Robert with us. My parents never took me to their friends when I was small so I am really happy I can take my children with me. My parents used to drink much more alcohol at parties. We don't — as everybody drives a car.
Write to me about your news. How are the children? Does Jane like her new school?
Love, Beata
3. Jesteśmy na wakacjach w Paryżu
Hotel NAPOLEON 23, rue de Pasteur Paris FRANCE

Dear Molly and David,
We are now in Paris. It is very hot here. Our hotel is nice, the rooms are air-conditioned.
You are never bored in Paris. There are fine museums, parks, bridges, places to relax here — you can sit in a cafe to drink your coffee after walking and visiting interesting places from Montmartre to Champs-Ely-sees. Shopping is very pleasant here — from nice stores and elegant shops to cheap markets. Life in the streets lasts late into the night. There are a lot of tourists here as the French are now on holiday in the South of France.
It is really great here, we love it.
With best wishes,
Yours,
Stella and Brian

Dear Jane,
Sorry for not having written to you for such a long time. But as you know, we have been moving to a new flat. We had a lot of work with it. First, it was not easy to find a nice place. When we found one, all the formalities took several days. The house needed to be painted. Then we had to pack the things, bring them to the new place and organise everything. Not everything is ready yet, but most of the things are.
I would like to describe my new house to you. The windows are big, looking out on the sea. Our bedroom is small with wooden floors. The furniture is white, with a lot of mirrors. The other two bedrooms are not yet equipped with furniture. But the bathroom is ready, made in beige and rose. You should see it!
The living room is really big. Imagine two big windows that look out on the sea, with a big terrace. There is also a fire place in the living room. The furniture is dark brown, very elegant. The garden around the house is not very big and it needs a lot of work.
When would it be possible for you to come to see us? I hope all is well with you.
Please write and let me know. Sonja

Dear Mum and Dad,
How are you? I am OK. The camp is very nice. The weather is very nice too so I have had no time to write to you. But since it's raining today, I have time to write letters. Does it also rain at your place?
We are having a very nice time, we walk a lot, we play ball and different games. I swim and row a lot.
The food is quite good here, unfortunately we have milk soup every day for breakfast. I do not like milk soup so I never have any. There are many other things to eat so I can choose. Lunches and suppers are not bad.
In the evenings we watch television or videos, sometimes we have a disco. Bedtime is ten o'clock. In my room there are five people, they are nice.
I will write again soon.
Love,
Mark

Dear Lucy,
We arrived in Southampton late at night. All day today we have had a lot of business meetings, talks with different people and visits in different departments. The business lunch was in a nice old restaurant. We had some salad as an appetiser, then spaghetti with mushroom sauce and steak. I enjoyed it but your dinners are much better.
We haven't visited anything as after the business meetings we arrived at our hotel exhausted. I am writing this short letter to you now in order to leave it at the reception tomorrow. I hope this letter will reach you before my arrival.
Tomorrow we are travelling to a small place nearby where we have an appointment at 9.00 a.m. Then, we are moving north to another place to see a big production factory.
I really miss you very much. I will phone you on Thursday.
Love,
Stephen

ENGLISH SCHOOL FOR FOREIGNERS 21, Broad Street Portsmouth Great Britain
Dear Sirs,
I am a twenty-year-old student of law at Poznari University, Poland. I would like to enrol in one of the English courses you organise.
Could you give me some details about the courses you offer. I would like to know your prices and accommodation. I'd rather stay with a host family, but please inform me also about the possibility of staying in a hotel or in a dormitory. I am interested in coming for 2-3 weeks in July or August.
How should I pay? I have a credit card, but I can also pay cash on arrival. Thank you in advance for your information.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Yours faithfully,
Tomasz Kowalski

HOTEL ALISON 34, July Avenue Spring Water GREAT BRITAIN
15th May 2000
Dear John,
Here I am at the spa. It is beautiful here in the mountains. There are hot springs in the valley I visited yesterday. I share my room with an elderly lady who talks too much. Even now, while I'm writing to you, she is talking all the time. Besides that, she is OK.
I can't phone you much as the telephone is in another building. After my supper I am too tired to go there, specially that you work so much and don't get home early. If I had a telephone by my bed I would phone you every day.
If you want to know what I do all day, I will tell you. In the morning I get up very early as my roommate wakes up at 4.00 or 5.00 a.m.! She tries not to make any noise, but I can hear she is awake. Breakfast is from 7.30 to 9.30. It only takes me about 15 minutes to have it. But I stay at the table longer, talking to people. Then, I spend all morning in the hot springs. It is really great! Lunch is between 1.00 — 3.00 p.m. After lunch I have a nap. In the afternoon I have a massage, and go to the gym, etc. They keep us busy all day until supper. Supper is between 6.00 — 8.00 p.m. and then we have some entertainment such as bingo, concert, show, etc. That's how I spend my time.
See you at home next week. I will phone you in the meantime.
Yours,
Tina

Dear Sarah,
I'm glad to have received a card from you. I should have written to you first but you know how it is.
So we came back home from your place on Sunday night. The flight was nice, but tiring. It was quite difficult for us to get back from the airport. We went to the station by bus, but then at the station we had to wait about five hours for the train!
We have very nice memories of our stay at your home. We developed the film a few days ago. I have enclosed several pictures. Now, we are back at work and I continue my studies. It is really hard to work and study at the same time.
We don't see our relatives and friends very often. Only my husband goes to see his mother two or three times a week. He helps her with shopping and cleaning. I take advantage of his going out and I study then.
How are all of you? Write to me soon and tell me your news.
Love,
Laura

Dear Mat,
At last I have passed all my exams. The last one was three days ago. All these examinations started in May: Polish, maths, German and geography. These were my matriculation examinations. Then I had a break and at the beginning of July I had my exams at a university. They were horrible. The worst was Polish and then geography. I found them very difficult. But I passed all of them. I am a student now. The results were announced today.
We aren't going abroad this summer because two months ago my mother lost her job and we haven't got much money. I am going to work in August, and in September I will probably go away. My school year begins in October.
Please, write me about your school.
Bye for now.
Peter

Dear Brit,
How are you? I'm very well.
I came to London three weeks ago to study at a language school. I am staying with an English family called Johnson. They are very young and have no children. Mr. Johnson is a driver and Mrs. Johnson, Sue, works at a beauty parlour. She has red and green hair and looks very interesting. She laughs a lot. Her husband is more serious. They are really very nice. The only problem is that they speak very fast.
In the morning I study, they work. I have my lunch at school and my dinner at the Johnson's. At the weekends they take me to the country, to Sue's mother who is really great.
At school I learn a lot. My teacher's name is Sylvia. She doesn't give us too much homework. I am in the advanced group. I still make a lot of mistakes. After classes I go sightseeing or shopping.
See you soon at home.
Love,
Wanda
