Dear Mr Rodgers,
I'm very sorry I haven't written for ages but so many things have been
going on that I have been busier than ever. Thanks a million for your most
kind letter and for your concern about my progress in English. Harry Potter
and the Order of the Phoenix
is on my bedtime shelf, though, I must admit,
sometimes I manage to read just a couple of sentences and I fall asleep.
But I remember my promise and I am trying to read English books. I have
very good marks in English, so I believe you can be proud of me.
The final year at high school has proved a real killer. There are tests and
revisions every week. I'm afraid some teachers seem to think theirs is the
most important school subject. As a result, I am studying from dawn till
dusk.
In fact, my History teacher had this idea that I should take part in the
contest about the history of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Although I
was not over the moon with the idea, I knew I should not turn it down. The
more so that he had copied the study materials and was ready to spend
extra time with the prospective participants. Luckily, I was the winner in the
first round of the competition and then I was second in the semi-finals! The
finals are held on May 2nd, so please keep your fingers crossed for me. If I
am one of the ten lucky winners, I will automatically become a student at
the Jagiellonian. I spend most of the time reading learned books about the
history of the university, and, of course, revising, writing essays etc. for
other subjects.
Now you know why I've taken so long to put pen to paper. You have my
word that I will let you know about the results of the competition in May.
Can't wait for your news.
Lots of love,
Yours,
Anna

Dear Mr and Mrs White,
Poland
1. _____________________________ for the kindness I experienced
when staying with you in Chester. I enjoyed the discussions we had at
dinner time and will certainly remember the farewell supper, which Mrs
White prepared. 2. _________________________ the beautiful album of
the city which you gave me. It will be a nice memento of my time in Chester.
The trip back 3.__________________________ , even though the bus
had a flat tyre, so there was a three-hour delay. The day after my arrival,
my parents and I left for the mountains, so I managed to get some rest
before the school year began.
In fact, this year at school is quite challenging, as I'm taking the school
leaving exams. 4. ______________________________________ all the
subjects I will be taking the exams in, though English is the obvious choice.
5. _________________________ medicine, but the competition is tough
and my parents would rather I chose a less demanding career.
6. _________________________ to meet you again. As I said, I would
very much like to come to study at Chester School of English again next
summer. My sister, who is 16, is also thinking of going to England and
signing up for a language course. I will be in touch if we go to England.
Hopefully, we will be able to book accommodation with you.

Hi,
9. _______________________________ the postcard from London.
10. ___________________________the Queen was not there. Surely,
next time you'll be more lucky, Vini.
My trip back 11. ______________________ . The bus had a flat tyre,
so I arrived three hours late. Luckily, the next day after my arrival my
parents and I went to the mountains for a couple of days. It was great.
The weather was fantastic and I went for long lonely walks in the forest.
How's your school? Things look tough here. All teachers talk about
nothing else but tests and revisions. Is it the same in Brazil?
12. ________________________ as to the exams, but I know I will be
taking English. 13. ______________________ medicine, or something
less ambitious. And you? What are you going to study?
14. _________________________ to meet in Chester next summer,
don't you think? Maybe my sister will be coming too; she is 16 and is not
bad company. I'm sure you'll get to like each other.
The night walks we took along the Roman walls in Chester were great
fun, especially the day we met Britta and Lisa. By the way, have you
heard from them? I haven't.
15. ______________________________ and don't study too much!
That's at least what I'm trying to do.
16. ____________________________________ .
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Till next time,
Adam
