Origin
Posterior gluteal line of ilium, posterior
lower sacrum, side of coccyx, aponeurosis
of erector spinae muscles, sacrotuberous
ligament, and gluteal aponeurosis
Insertion
Larger proximal portion and superficial
fibers of the distal portion into iliotibial tract
of the tensor fascia lata; deep fibers of the
distal portion into the gluteal tuberosity of
the femur
Actions
Hip extension and lateral (external
rotation); lower fibers assist in hip
adduction and upper fibers assist in
abduction; via insertion into iliotibial tract,
helps stabilize the knee in extension

Inferior gluteal nerve
