CMP Sensor voltage supply, checking
- Disconnect 3-pin connector from Camshaft
Position Sensor (G40).
If voltage is OK:
- Connect Fluke 83 hand multimeter (US 1119 or equivalent) to measure voltage
across disconnected connector terminals -1- and -3-, using cables from VAG
1594 adapter kit.
- Switch ignition ON.
Multimeter: 10 Volts (minimum)
- Switch ignition OFF.
If voltage is NOT OK:
- Replace Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor (G40)

Functional check
- Remove fuse 18 (S18).
- Bridge connector and Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor (G40) using VAG
1315A/4 adapter cable.
- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester (LED test light) to test connectors -2- and -3-
, using cables from VAG 1594 adapter kit.
- Operate starter.
LED must flicker
If necessary replace Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor (G40)

Ignition Coil voltage supply, checking
- Disconnect 5-pin connector from Ignition Coil
(N152).
Activation, checking
If LED does NOT flicker:
- Connect Fluke 83 hand multimeter (US 1119 or equivalent) to measure voltage
across connector terminals -1- and -5-, using cables from VAG 1594 adapter kit.
- Switch ignition ON.
Multimeter should read 10 Volts (minimum)
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Remove fuse 18 (S18).
- Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester (LED test light) to connector terminals -5-
and -2-, using cables from VAG 1594 adapter kit.
- Operate starter and check ignition signal from Motronic Engine Control Module
(ECM).
LED must flicker.
- Repeat the test twice more, with the voltage tester connected to terminals -5-
and -3-, then -5- and -4-.
- Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) (J220)
