The other day in the local newspaper I read the story about a man who was fined £35

while cycling to the local supermarket. Are you wondering perhaps what terrible
misdemeanour he could have committed? The fact was, the poor guy wasn’t wearing a bike
helmet, and a police officer decided to take the law about wearing one rather seriously.

Although the new law which makes wearing bike helmets compulsory for all riders

was passed easily, it seems that the majority of adult cyclists have so far resolved to ignore
this regulation. However, incidents like the one I described above will happen again and
I hope this will lead to a public debate about cyclists’ safety in general.

It is a fact that many countries have enacted laws for the mandatory use of helmets for

underage cyclists which no-one in their right mind would question. After all, at this age they
are more vulnerable and in danger of head injuries for a number of reasons - with the need to
show off being one of the most common. During a campaign which was launched a year ago
in order to promote helmet use by minors, it was pointed out that almost 18,000 children
under 14 had to have hospital treatment for head injuries caused by cycling accidents.

It is also true that helmet technology and design have advanced remarkably over the

last few years. As helmet manufacturers claim, constant research and the use of new materials
have enabled them to provide cyclists with enhanced helmets. Despite being a lot lighter
in order to prevent over sweating, they are also much more durable. Moreover, they come
in nice colours and fashionable designs (although I don’t think some female cyclists would
readily agree with that). On the other hand, every year some manufacturers report a small
number of cases when crash helmets failed to perform their primary protective function in real
accidents.

A lot of health organizations have conducted their own studies and published numbers

aimed at promoting the use of crash helmets among cyclists. Anyone interested in these
statistics about cycling accidents can easily find that head injuries were the most common
cause of death among cyclists involved in road crashes. Helmet manufacturers are quick
to point out that their products are up to 85% effective in protecting the cyclist from a serious
head injury - a figure which I would not dare put into doubt.
Yet somehow, I cannot shake off a feeling that enacting the helmet law is an attempt
to place the entire responsibility for cyclists’ safety on them rather than motorists, who are the
greatest threat even to the most careful cyclist no matter whether he or she is wearing a helmet
or not. The majority of fatal head injuries that statistics tell us about, do not occur because
people just fall off their bikes, but because they are hit by a car or another vehicle. Both
country lanes and city streets are a hostile environment for cyclists especially with the attitude
of motorists who just do not respect bicycle users on the road. Until drivers’ attitude change,
no amount of helmet campaigns or laws will noticeably improve the safety of cyclists.

How do bats know where they are going?
An odd thing about bats is that they do not have a good eyesight, although
they have to hunt for their food during the night. In fact, bats do not rely on
their eyes to find out their way. They use a kind of radar system which
works like this: when they fly, bats make high-pitched sounds which are so
high that human beings cannot yet hear them. The echoes from these sounds
are thrown back to the bat while it is still in to the air. The bat is able to
estimate if the echo came from an object nearby or far away and it will
change the direction of its flight to avoid to crashing into the object. Bats
depend on flying more than most animals. While birds and insects also fly,
they have and the ability to walk if necessary. However, a bat cannot walk
very easily because of its limbs and feet are not suitable; it cannot even stand
easily. So it is actually then easier for a bat to hang upside down from
a branch than to sit on it.
