Fitting

1

Clean the seal’s contact surface on the axle
tube.

2

Lift the hub into place, using tool 82 328
and the workshop hoist.

Note: Take care to avoid damaging the inner
seal.

3

Oil the outer bearing and fit it in place.

4

Fit the thrust washer and inner nut (adjus-
ting nut).

Note: The chamfer on the nut should face out-
wards.

5

Rotate the hub and screw the nut on using
socket 82 327. Tighten until the hub starts to
offer resistance.

6

Seat the bearing by tightening the nut to
500 Nm, using socket 82 327.

7

Slacken the nut half a turn.

17

Fitting the hub

Adjusting bearing clearance

1

Mount dial gauge 98 075 with magnetic
foot 587 250 between hub and axle tube.

2

Slacken the adjusting nut and adjust the
axial clearance to 0.15 mm. Rotate the
hub several times, tapping it with a rub-
ber mallet while slackening the nut.
Check bearing clearance by pulling the
bearing straight out and then pressing it
straight in again.

3

Rotate the hub at least five times and
check the clearance afresh.

Note: Correct clearance is 0.15 mm, during

adjustment.

4

Remove the dial gauge. Fit the lock plate
and outer hub nut.

Note: The chamfer on the nut should face
inwards.

5

Tighten the outer hub nut to 560 Nm,
using socket 82 327.

6

Check the bearing clearance.

Note: Correct clearance is 0.01 - 0.05 mm
after tightening the outer hub nut.

7

If bearing clearance is not correct,
slacken the outer hub nut and reduce or
increase the clearance by means of the
inner hub nut. Then repeat points 4
and 5.

8

Lock the outer nut by means of the lock
plate. If any of the lock plate’s flanges do
not coincide with the nut’s grooves, tighten
the nut to the nearest groove so that it can be
locked.

9

If the axle tube seal has been removed, fit a
new axle tube using press drift 82 326 and
shank 98 450.

10

Grease the axle tube seal.

11

Insert the drive shaft.

Note: The hole in the drive shaft must be situ-
ated between two of the hub cover’s bolt holes.

12

Fit the hub cover and tighten the bolts to
46 Nm,

Note: Make sure that the hole in the drive shaft
and the hole for the oil plug in the hub cover are
opposite each other.

13

Fill the hub with oil (oil volume 0.7 litres).
See booklet 00:03-09 for the correct grade
of oil.

14

Fit the brake caliper, using lifting tool
99 344.

19

Fitting the hub

15

Tighten the brake caliper bolts to 400 Nm,
using extension 99 358.

Note: To obtain the correct tightening torque,
make sure that extension 99 358 and the torque
wrench are at right angles (90˚).

16

Fit the brake chamber and tighten the bolts
to 180 Nm.

17

For fitting brake components, see booklet
10:02-10.

18

Fit the wheels. Use the vehicle lifts.

19

Remove the stands and lower the bus to the
ground.
