About Network Licensing

3

A b o u t N e t w o r k L i c e n s i n g

GibbsCAM Network Licensing establishes a network license server which maintains a software key for
each option purchased from Gibbs and Associates. These software keys (or “licenses”) are distributed
to nodes across a network to enable the nodes with installed GibbsCAM software to run the
purchased module options. Network Licensing is an alternate to the hardware key scheme used to
protect GibbsCAM. Each client computer on a network should have a copy of GibbsCAM installed. To
run the software a user will “check out” a software key from the network. There is no limit to the
number of GibbsCAM seats installed on the network, only a limit to the number used concurrently off
each server.

All the software that is required for network licensing will be supplied by Gibbs and Associates. This
software includes the FLEXlm® Tools and several support files. The Network License will function
on Windows XP Professional®, Windows XP Home Edition ®, and Windows Server 2003 ®. These
are the only recommended operating system for full compatibility. The Network License must be
used over a TCP/IP protocol network. Any other network protocols are incompatible with this
option.

ABOUT NETWORK LICENSE INSTALLATION PROCESS

The acquisition and installation of the Network Licensing is generally a four step process.
1. The first step is getting the NLO license.

You’ve decided you want to run NLO and purchase it from your reseller. The reseller sends
you an applicaton called GetHost.exe.

You run GetHost which acquires some information about your network and send the output
to Gibbs and Associates. See

“1. Server License Generation” on page 5

.

From the output data we send you the license along with the software.

2. The second step is setting up the licensing system.

You receive the GibbsCAM software and the

Network License Option – License Files

CD.

You run the license installer. See

“2. Server License & Software Installation” on page 5

.

3. The third step is configuring the server.

From the software CD you run the LMTools software on the server.

You configure the network licensing service on the server and activate the service. See

“3.

Configuring and Starting the Server Software” on page 5

.

4. The fourth step is installing the client software on each node.

You run the license CD on each client machine. See

“4. Client License Installation” on page 8

.

!

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of GibbsCAM (pre v8.0) you will have to
reconfigure your NLO license server to use a new license file. GibbsCAM 2005 (v7.7)
and previous version license files will not work with GibbsCAM 2006. See

“Updating To

Work With GibbsCAM 2006” on page 8

for details on how to do this.

About Network Licensing

4

You install the GibbsCAM software on each client machine. See

“Installing the GibbsCAM

System” on page 11

.

WHAT FILES ARE INVOLVED?

GetHost.exe:

This application must be run to generate the licenses for the network software.

GetHost.exe is found on the NLO CD main menu and can be run from the GibbsCAM NLO CD.

Network License Option – License Files CD:

This CD has two folders:

Server

and

Client

, each folder has an

executable called

Setup.exe

. These files install the license files on the server and client machines.

FlexLM Folder:

This folder gets installed at the root level of the server and all clients. The copy on the

server contains

lmgrd.exe

,

gibbsnet.exe

and

gibbs.dat

while the copy on each client contains only

gibbs.dat

. These files must not be moved.

lmgrd.exe:

This item controls the network licensing system.

gibbsnet.exe:

This item is the GibbsCAM interface to the network licensing system

gibbs.dat:

This file is used by the lmtools.exe and supplies the system with what features are available,

their quantity and the server’s ID number.

lmtools.exe:

This is the primary interface for a network administrator and controls the “checking out”

of the software. It is located on the GibbsCAM 2006 NLO CD and can be launched by clicking on the
CD menu item

“NLO Server License Setup”

. This can also be found in the Flex Tools folder on the

GibbsCAM NLO installation CD. The FLEX Tools folder also contains HTML files that provide online
help.

THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

1. SERVER LICENSE GENERATION

Run the

GetHost

application (see

page 15) on the computer that you
plan to use as the license server.

GetHost

acquires the server’s IP and

ethernet card ID. Save this data as
a text file and send it as an
attachment in an e-mail to

NLO@GibbsCAM.com

. This file

will be used to generate the license
files. You should provide Gibbs and Associates with this data as soon as possible. You cannot use the
GibbsCAM software until Gibbs and Associates has received this data and generates a license file.

2. SERVER LICENSE & SOFTWARE INSTALLATION

Once Gibbs and Associates receives the GetHost output the license files will be generated and sent
back to you. Along with the GibbsCAM software you will receive a

Network License Option – License

Files

CD. This CD has two folders:

Server

and

Client

, each folder has an executable called

Setup.exe

.

1. Place the

Network License Option – License Files

CD in the server’s CD-ROM drive.

2. Open the server folder and run

Setup.exe

.

This creates a folder called FlexLM on the root of your C drive. The folder contains the files

lmgrd.exe

,

gibbsnet.exe

and

gibbs.dat

. These items must not be moved.

3. CONFIGURING AND STARTING THE SERVER SOFTWARE

Before the network license can be used

LMTOOLS

must be used to configure a network licensing

service on the server.

1. Load the GibbsCAM NLO installation CD into your server’s CD-ROM and Launch

lmtools.exe

by

clicking on the

“NLO Server License Setup”

item on the CD’s menu.

!

If you are currently running Network Licensing and are upgrading your software,
you MUST stop the service before running the software off the Server CD.

About Network Licensing

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What operating systems may be used with Network Licensing?

A. It is strongly recommended that Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 be the operating system

under which the server runs.

Q. What if we are using another application that uses FLEXlm as a licensing method?

A. This is not a problem. The installer will recognize that you have FLEXlm License Manager

installed and will update the software if it is an older version otherwise it leaves the software
alone. Follow the installation procedure as described. Doing so will ensure you do not overwrite
any existing licensing. Once installed simply direct the License Manager to the license for your
existing software. If your server software for other FLEXlm applications is not an executable but a
Control Panel, the software installed by Gibbs is entirely separate from your existing software.

Q. How does a user access the network licensing?

A. When GibbsCAM is launched the Checkout screen will automatically appear. This will allow the

user to select available features of GibbsCAM from the company’s license registry.

Q. What about hardware keys? Will they still be in use?

A. Yes, hardware keys will still be used for non-network licensed seats. Any client computer with the

Network Licensing option will not access the hardware key as Network Licensing takes
precedence over hardware keys. Simply put your hardware keys on nodes not running NLO.

Q. What happens if the network connection is severed or the network server crashes?

A. The system periodically polls the network to ensure that the running copy of GibbsCAM is

properly licensed. If there is an interruption in network service the user will be informed of this
error and the system will continue to work. If the network connection is regained, nothing
further will happen. Should the network connection not be regained the user will again be
informed of an error. After failing to communicate with the network a number of times the
software will shut down. The user should have more than adequate time to save the current
project and quit the program.

Q. Why doesn't the License Manager automatically start when the server is started?

A. If you are running Windows NT then Use NT Services is likely not selected. If you are running

Windows 9x then the License Manager will not start at power-up. This is due to the differences in
Windows NT and 9x and their network capabilities.

Q. Is there a limit to the number of users?

A. There is no limit to the number of nodes on which GibbsCAM is installed, only to the number

running concurrently.

Q. Is there a limit to the number of concurrent users?

A. Yes. Each instance of the FLEXlm License Manager can only support 1024 users at a time. This

includes all software that uses the License Manager. For more than 1024 users, multiple servers
must be set up. Thus if you have two products each with 600 seats licensed, you would need at
least two servers, each running the FLEXlm License Manager.

Q. The ethernet card has failed or has been replaced. What do I need to do?

A. If the ethernet card for a server fails the GetHost installation procedure must be repeated.

Q. I have a new computer because the prior one was upgraded, failed, was misplaced or stolen. What do I need to do?

background image

About Network Licensing

12

A. If the computer the software is installed on is upgraded, fails, is misplaced or is stolen, a new

license file will have to be generated to replace the software. Once the machine is replaced, run
the GetHost application and repeat the installation process. There may be a slight charge to do
this.

Q. The server is not being recognized or the clients cannot establish communication with the server.

A. See

“Servers Using Windows Firewall” on page 10

.

Q. FlexLM works sometimes and then doesn’t or it worked and now it doesn’t.

A. This is often a symptom of Norton AntiVirus™ thinking that FlexLM is a script and is blocking

the application from running. This occurs if you are using the Scriptblocking option. To fix this
you must set an exception within AntiVirus to allow FlexLM.exe to run.

Q. Can I specify which port is used for the GibbsCAM Network License Option?

A. Yes. Open the c:\FlexLM\Gibbs.dat file in any text editor. On the line that starts with Server add

the port number to the end of the line. It should look like this:

SERVER 192.0.0.0 00b0d0e6646a 17004

Your IP and Ethernet addresses will be different. Any port may be used. If no port is specified the
next available port within the range of 27000-27009 is used.

Q. Can I point to a machine name or domain name instead of to an IP address?

A. Yes. Open the c:\FlexLM\Gibbs.dat file in any text editor. On the line that starts with Server

replace the IP address with the machine name or domain name. On the server you will need to
perform the Following after making this change:

Launch LMTools

Select Configuration Using Services

Change to the Start/Stop/Reread tab

Click Stop Service

Wait a few seconds then click Start Service

You will then need to make this same edit to the Gibbs.dat file on each client system. The same
Gibbs.dat file is used on the server and client so you can copy the file you’ve already edited to the
client systems and simply replace the existing file.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The system supports all monitors capable of running at a resolution of 800x600 (Super VGA) or
higher. The GibbsCAM window is dynamically resizable from approximately 640x525 to the highest
resolution your monitor will support. Please be aware that with monitors running higher monitor
resolutions, you will need more RAM to support solids and Cut Part Rendering and a better video
card. Recommended and actual requirements do not have a definite value. Your requirements will
vary depending on the type of part you are trying to cut and the complexity of the part. The more
complex a part, the higher your system requirements. If you use only the basic Mill or Lathe modules
the Minimum settings for Production shown below are adequate. If you are regularly making parts that
are prismatic solids with thousands of faces, the Recommended SolidSurfacer system shown below
could be considered a bare minimum. We recommend using the latest available service pack from
Microsoft as we experience greater reliability with the newer software.

ABOUT THE GIBBSCAM INSTALLER

The installer includes options for installing the Production Modules (Lathe and Mill), Advanced
Milling, Multi-Task Machining, Solids Import, 2.5D Solids, SolidSurfacer, Tombstone Machining
System, Machine Simulation, Wire-EDM, ProAXYZ 4as, Exchange, Solid Exchange Built On Granite,
CutDATA™, PostHASTE for GibbsCAM, the ACIS (SAT) Reader, the CATIA Reader, the VDA-FS
Reader, the CAD Transfer Add-Ins and Tutorial Part files. Once run, the installer will recommend
items to install based on what you are licensed for. Additionally, the CD will automatically install the
Moorpark engraving font and create a desktop shortcut to the GibbsCAM application.

BEFORE INSTALLING

The first thing you should do before installing the software is ensure that your system has the most
recent service pack for your operating system, has the latest video drivers installed and you should
install the server license file for the Network Licensing Option (NLO) if this is the first time you are
installing GibbsCAM NLO on this computer. The licensing software on the server must be configured
before the GibbsCAM software is installed on a workstation if you have the Network Licensing
scheme. See

“About Network License Installation Process” on page 3

for information on installing the

licensing software.

!

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of GibbsCAM (pre v8.0) you will have
to reconfigure your NLO license server to use a new license file. GibbsCAM 2005
(v7.7) and previous version license files will not work with GibbsCAM 2006. See

“Updating To Work With GibbsCAM 2006” on page 8

for details on how to do

this.

Installation

16

At some point before installing your new software be sure to review the Release Notes that came with
your order, to check for any last minute information. After reviewing the Release Notes, follow the
instructions on

page 19

to install the GibbsCAM system. If a version of GibbsCAM is currently on

your system you should not uninstall the software. If you wish to install multiple instances of the same
version of GibbsCAM, please see

“Re-Running the Installer & Uninstalling” on page 23

.

Please note that the installer associates all VNC files with the newly installed version of GibbsCAM. If
you wish to open an existing part in an older version, simply drag the file to a shortcut, the program
window, or use the

Open

dialog. You should also note that if an older file is opened and saved in a

newer version of GibbsCAM, it can no longer be used in an older version. If necessary, you may use
the

Save A Copy

function to save the part as an older version to work around this.

PRODUCTION AND SOLIDS OPTIONS

The Production modules include the basic Mill and Lathe modules, as well as the Advanced Milling
option. The Production modules may be installed separately if you have multiple seats of GibbsCAM
software including Solids seats and Production seats. You may install only the Production Modules if
you have a seat of GibbsCAM that is only keyed for the Production Modules of software. The Solids
Import, 2.5D Solids, SolidSurfacer and Machine Simulation options require significantly more hard
drive space and RAM, and should only be installed on those seats that will be running the GibbsCAM
Solids Import, 2.5D Solids, SolidSurfacer or Machine Simulation modules.

ABOUT THE OPTIONAL ITEMS

There are numerous optional items in the installer and the

Extras

folder that you may find useful. Basic

Material Database. CutDATA, Predator Editor, documentation and tutorial part files are included on
the CD for your convenience.

PostHASTE for GibbsCAM is an alternative post processor that allows you to build your own
posts for basic 3-axis mills and 2-axis lathes. Documentation for this option may be found in the
Extras folder.

The Predator CNC Editor Version 6.1 software that is included on the GibbsCAM CD is a light
version of the product. Predator Editor is a powerful G-code editor. When you install the light
version, use the serial number “LIGHT” to activate it. The light version is a very functional editor
with no limitation on the size of the edited file. To understand the differences between the light
version and the full-function version, you should view the Predator CNC Editor V6.1 Feature
Grid PDF file in the Extras folder. Please visit www.predator-software.com for more information
or if you are interested in upgrading to the full function version of the product.

There are tutorial part files included on the CD which can be installed on your system. The
Tutorial Parts folder contains parts used in the documentation, as well as additional parts with
which to experiment with. These files require up to 205MB of hard disk space depending on the
options for which you are licensed. The part files are not available when using the Web installer.

The entire set of GibbsCAM documentation is included as PDF files (cross-platform files that are
viewable with Adobe Reader 7.0). These files, including an installer for Acrobat Reader, are also
accessible from the

Extras

folder.

Feeds and Speeds Databases

The Basic Material Database is a collection of recommended feeds and speeds which any user may
install. The file is in a format that may be imported into an existing

Material.txt

file using the

Import Material plug-in.

CutDATA should only be installed if you have purchased this option.

The CutDATA material database

provides over 71,000 machining recommendations for feeds, speeds, tool material, etc. for
integration and access by the Material Library capability contained in the system. The version of
CutDATA that is installed with this release is not an updated version, but if you want to install it
and want to keep your old material database, you should copy your

Material.txt

file to another

directory before installing CutDATA.

WHERE ARE THINGS INSTALLED?

POST PROCESSORS

Any post processors you are to receive will be included on a floppy disk which is included with your
order. Copy the Posts folder from the floppy disk to your hard drive. You may store your post
processors anywhere. After the first use the software will default to the folder from which you last
opened a post processor.

FILE LOCATIONS

Please be aware that there are three different classifications for data: User data, Global data and Install
Directory data. User data consists of files that change with each user, Global data consists of files that
are applied to all users. Install Directory data includes generic data as well as Reporter templates.
These three types of data are stored in three different locations, as detailed below. If you customize
these files or upgrade your version of GibbsCAM frequently, accessing and copying these files can

background image

18

become quite important. Please note that Windows marks the

Application Data

folders as invisible and

Limited Users cannot access them.

Global Data

X:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Gibbs\GibbsCAM\(version #)\

This directory holds the bolt & tap tables, the CutDATA file (Material.txt), your communication set-
up data (protocol.txt), a file that stores the Hole Wizard data (prefs.rsc), a folder that contains your
custom MDDs and the PostHASTE Library folder that contains PostHASTE library files. You will
want to copy these files to a new installation directory if you have customized them and install
another version of GibbsCAM. The location of the CutDATA file can also customized within
GibbsCAM. See the

Preferences

section of GibbsCAM.

User Data

X:\Documents and Settings\(user)\Application Data\Gibbs\GibbsCAM\(version #)\

This directory holds

sysdef.rsc

(what was entered in dialogs),

UIState.dat

(where your windows were

and their size) and a

Plugins

folder that contains what was entered in the plug-ins. While any of these

items can be moved between version folders it is not recommended because of unpredictable
behavior. If you move the files and experience odd behavior, delete them from the new directory and
relaunch GibbsCAM.

Install Directory Data

X:\program files\Gibbs\GibbsCAM\(version #)\

or wherever you install GibbsCAM.

Included in this folder are generic versions of Global and User data files as well as Reporter Templates,
which are located in the

folder. If you create custom reports they should

be placed in this folder. Items in the install directory are marked as Read Only. If you do not have
sufficient privileges you will need to have a user with Administrator access make changes to this
directory.

Existing Communications, CutDATA & Library Files

Installing a new version of GibbsCAM will install the default material database and create a blank
communications file, default PostHASTE library files and Reporter templates. Once the new version
is installed you may copy protocol.txt, material.txt and the Library folder to the new GibbsCAM folder.

) and then re-run the installer. The original installaton will have to be

uninstalled and a new, second installaton can be started. The process is described in the following
section.

RE-RUNNING THE INSTALLER & UNINSTALLING

Uninstalling GibbsCAM

The recommended method for
uninstalling GibbsCAM is to use

Add

and Remove Programs

item found in the

Start

menu under

Control Panels

.

Re-installing GibbsCAM

Each time the Installer is run it will attempt to install software but if it finds that the same release (e.g.
v8.00 is not the same release as v8.01) of the GibbsCAM 2006 software has already been installed, the
Installer will prompt you to uninstall that version. Once the uninstall is complete you may install the
software again. Please note that this is not the preferred method of uninstalling GibbsCAM.
Additionally, this process will not remove any folders and files you have created in the program folder
or any Global or User data. This is to ensure any modifications you have made to these files are not
lost.
