The origins of popular British sports

Football

Some people think that the Ancient Chinese invented a kind of football. However, there is evidence that the Ancient Romans and Egyptians also played an early form of football. Football became popular in England during the fourteenth century. These games were chaotic and violent. Large crowds of hundreds of people played. Broken arms and legs were frequent and sometimes people were killed. In 1314, football was forbidden by the King of England but people continued to play it.

Cricket

The traditional English game of cricket originated in the English countryside, probably in the fourteenth century. An early form of the game was played by farm workers who threw balls against trees. Another worker stood by the tree and tried to hit the ball away with a stick. The game later developed and became popular all over England.

Tennis

Some people believe that tennis originated in Ancient Egypt but there is little to prove this. The most popular theory is that it was first played in twelfth-century French monasteries. It is thought that the game was played by monks who hit a ball with their hand against a wall. The game became increasingly popular and eventually gloves were worn to protect players' hands. Later, the gloves were replaced with a racquet and the ball was hit over a low rope hung across a courtyard.
