1. Introduction
In the United States there are more than 25,000 activists who form the core of hate groups such as Aryan Nations, the Ku Klux Klan, the Christian Patriots and racist Skinheads. There are another 150,000 people who can be referred to as "armchair racists" who attend occasional rallies, buy literature and are "active sympathizers". These groups, and there are many of them, believe that they have the duty to defend the white "master" race. They have singled out other groups, including Jewish people, people of other skin colors, gay and lesbian people as targets of their hatred and violence. Hate activity is any negative activity directed at any broad category of people with hurtful intentions. These white supremist groups have committed many bias crimes against humanity. Bias crimes are hate activities that have been declared illegal by law. Groupthink and post decisional dissonance plays a large part in why and how hate crimes are committed and how these groups still exists.
There are at least four symptoms that directly apply to white supremist groups. The first is the feeling of invulnerability, shared by most or all group members, that leads to overoptimism and excessive risk taking. Many of these groups employ religion as a way to unite the group.
A second symptom are the stereotyped views. They have their prejudices and they will not even think about changing them, no matter how stupid these stereotypes might be.
A third symptom is the unquestioned belief in the group`s inherent morality. White supremist groups believe that their way is the only way and is backed by the bible.
The fourth symptom of groupthink are self-appointed "mind guards" who protect the group from information that might challenge the group´s complacency. White supremist groups have many different "educators" and leaders who also spread information that support the group ideals.
2. White supremacy groups
There are a lot of different groups which have generally the same platform. The following listing should show how many of them are already known:
Various Ku Klux Klan factions (such as the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan), Skinhead International, the Aryan Nations, Tom Metzger`s White Aryan Resistance (WAR),
Militia of Montana (MOM), Nevada Volunteers (Nevada-based militia), Mountain Church, Teutonic Unity, Euro-American Alliance, National States Rights Party, The Arm of the Lord (CSAL), Western Guard, the Order (splinter of the Aryan Nations), Aryan Brotherhood (splinter of the Aryan Nations), White American Bastion (splin- ter of the Aryan Nations), Silent Brotherhood (splinter of the Aryan Nations), Posse Comitatus, Nationalsozialistische Arbeiterpartei Auslandsorganisation (Nebraska-based organisation with ties to German Aryan groups), Christian Defense League, Christian Identity Movement, Church of the Creator (COTC).
These are not all of the groups existing all over the world.
2.1. The Skinheads International
Neo-Nazi Skinheads first appeared in the United States in the mid-eighties and have since then shown substantial growth. From a membership of 1,000 to 1,500 in twelve states in early 1988, their ranks swelled to between 3,300 and 3,500 in forty states by 1993. These numbers have held essentially steady since then.
In addition to the "real" Skinheads there are at least an equal number of so-called "wanna-be`s", youngsters who aspire to the status of regular Skinheads. The wanna-be`s copy the dress and style of Skinheads, listen to their "oi" music and share many of their prejudices. They are usually young people living in areas where there are no organized Skinhead gangs. They remain outside the rank of actual Skins because they are fearful of the consequences of "coming out". Just to complete the picture it is said that not all Skinheads are neo-Nazis. There are said to be many Skinheads who are anti-racist. They are part of the traditional, non-racist Skinhead subculture and are not the perpetrators of the hate crimes discussed here.
The growth in membership has been paralleled by an extraordinary record of violence. American Skins have graduated from the use of boots, bats and knives to using firearms. Indeed, the relative availability of guns in the United States has made American Skins among the most dangerous and violent in the world. Only the German Skinheads have consistently matched their American counterparts in the frequency and ferocity of their attacks.
Most of the Skinheads`murders victims, which have increased from six such killings in 1990 to at least 37 in 1993, have been members of minority groups: Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, homosexual and homeless people. American Skinheads have also committed thousands of lesser crimes: beatings, stabbings, shootings, thefts,
synagogue desecrations and other forms of mayhem and intimidation.
There is no single national Skinhead organization in the United States. Instead, loosely linked networks of Skinhead gangs operate in scattered communities. It is not uncommon for a group to leave a city and resume activity in another locale after feeling pressure from law enforcement and the community.
Contrary to their claim that they represent the working-class youth, American Skinheads come from widely varying economic backgrounds. Their roots often lie not in economic decay but in domestic instability - a high proportion of American Skins come from broken homes or single-parent families. Their gangs, like other American youth gangs, often serve as surrogate families for their members. This kind of domestic discord was tragically illustrated in February, 1997, when two Skinhead brothers were accused of bludgeoning and stabbing to death their mother, father and younger brother in their home near Allentown, Pennsylvania. The teenage brothers, both over six feet tall and weighing more than 200 pounds, were immersed in Neo-Nazi Skinhead culture and had Nazi symbols and slogans tattooed on their bodies and foreheads. The boys` Nazi views were evidently at the center of an ongoing conflict with their parents, a religious couple who had struggled to turn their sons away from thier hateful way of life, right up until the time of the murders.
Soon after their initial appearance in the Untied States, Skinheads began to hook up with more organized racists and anti-Semites. In 1985, a small group of Skins from Chicago, dressed in full regalia, appeared at a gathering of hate group ac- tivists at the farm of a former Michigan Ku Klux Klan leader. Back in Chicago, under the name "Romantic Violence", they peddled tapes of the British Skinhead band Skrewdriver.
But the Skinheads also join other white supremacy groups. They were, for example,
soon marching in Klan demonstrations. At a January 1993 march in Pulaski, Tennessee (the birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan), about 100 Skinheads marched with the Klansmen, shouting anti-Jewish and white supremacist slogans. As they outgrow the youthful Skinhead demeanor, some Skins actually join the KKK. Foremost among ex-Skinheads now in the Klan ranks is Shawn Slater.
During the eighties, Slater was a well-known leader of the Denver Skins. In 1990, he began forging an alliance with the Klan. By 1992, Slater was leading a Klan rally in Denver. He and his followers subsequently switched affiliation from the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan to a more radical Klan faction. The Skins have also linked up with such other old-line hate groups as the Aryan Nations, COTC (the Church of the Creator, and Tom Metzger`s White Aryan Resistance (WAR). These older groups refer to the Skins as their "front-line warriors". WAR has provided ideo-
logical and tactical direction to large numbers of Skinheads who have heeded Metzger`s call for violence against minorities.
This alliance reached its low when on November 12, 1988, Mulugeta Seraw,
a 27-year-old Ethiopian immigrant, was beaten to death by three members of the Skinhead gang East Side White Pride Portland, Oregon. Investigation into the murder revealed links between the gang and the White Aryan Resistance. American Skinheads do not confine themselves to ethnic hatred. They have been held responsible for several murders (and countless assaults) based on their hatred especially of homosexuals. To show how aggressive and violent their crimes are, I could make a list, but it would certainly be more than two pages long. Here is only one example for their hate-motivated crimes: William Douglas Metz, 36, died after he suffered more than 20 stab wounds in a July 1994 attack in Reno, Nevada. An informant told the police that the attack was a "fag-bashing" by a Skinhead gang. A 21-year-old racist Skinhead pleaded guilty, adding that he had also wan- ted to carve a swastika (an ancient sign consisting of a cross with each arm bent at a right angle, now used as a sign for the Nazi Party) on the victim`s body, but did not have enough time. He received two life sentences without possibility of parole.
When they cannot find living human beings to assault or when their courage can not rise to that level, American Skinheads have attacked the graves of the de- parted.
2.1.1. Skinhead music and "literature"
They have also produced a number of publications over the years. Some ran for only a few issues, others continue to circulate. Magazines that have been pub- lished in the last few years include: Blood and Honor, out of Long Beach, Cali-fornia, National Socialist Skinhead, published in St. Paul, Minnesota, Iron Will and Skinhead Power, both from North Carolina and the Berserker of Levitown, New York. These magazines focus on Skinhead music, but racist commentary is in- jected throughout each issue in editorials and interviews.
Resistance Records, a major producer of Skinhead music in Detroit, also puts out a magazine that focuses on Skinhead music in the United States and Canada. It claims a circulation of "12,000 and growing".
The magazine`s publisher is George Burdi, a Canadian, and typical for the maga- zine`s level of rhetoric is its critique of the movie Schindler`s List:
"Just what we needed in these hard times, yet another movie about the Holy-Hoax ... Steven Spielberg directs this so-called "spell- binding drama" about you-know-what that has been hailed by critics as a "remarkable accomplishment". The only thing "remarkable" about it is that after all these years, Hollywood is still churning out this garbage. This shit does not even belong in our toilets."
There are also a lot of Skinhead music bands such as Das Reich (from Wisconsin), Rahowa (Toronto), Aggravated Assault (New Jersey), Berserker (Oklahoma), Centurion (Wisconsin), Bound for Glory (Minnesota), and from Delaware the band Nordic Thunder. The lead singer of this band, Joe Rowan, died after a concert. He was killed in a skirmish with black youths in a Racine convenience store. Rowan was eulogized on the cover of the Resistance magazine with lyrics from one of his own songs:
"I know the truth and I know what is right,
To destroy the zionist way and keep my land White ...
I`ve sworn to protect my people,
For that I`m crucified,
I live for my Race and for my Race I will die..."
All of these groups admit that all of their music has a racial theme and that this is 100% white!
2.1.2. Skinheads and government
Since 1989, when the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) established a Skinhead task force within its Civil Rights Division, DOJ has been effective in prosecuting the young hatemongers and in bringing national attention to the problem. Federal law enforcement recently received a powerful weapon for their arsenal: penalty enhancement for hate crimes. The 1994 crime law calls for in- creased penalties for federal crimes where the victim was selected "because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability or sexual orientation of any person". The Federal Government thus joins the 34
states (plus the District of Columbia) that have passed laws, many based on an
ADL model, that provide for stepped-up penalties for bias-motivated crimes. Since Skinheads most frequently choose their victims based on a credo of hatred for certain groups, penalty enhancement laws should result in longer sentences for these thugs and help to reduce Skinhead terror in the communities.
In sum, the United States faces a Skinhead problem that is no less serious than that of many other nations. But it has to be taken seriously, otherwise it is lethal.
2.2. The Aryan Nations
This group was formed in 1974 by Richard Girnt Butler in Hayden Lake, Idaho. There they have their 20-acre headquater. The numbers of active members are between 100 and 500 and they can count about 6,000-15,000 supporters. Their stated aims, their ideology or policies are that the Europeans are the lost tribe of Isreal, Jews are satanic and Blacks are subhuman, and that the US Federal Government is illegal. They refer to the US Government as the "Zionist Occupa- tional Government" or "ZOG" and follow tenets of the Christian Identity philosophy.
The Aryan Nations is America`s largest, most violent right-wing, white supremacist organization that believes the US government is controlled by the state of Israel. The organization advocates the elimination of Jews and all minorities and also acts as an umbrella movement for many other organizations (as we have seen above).
In this group the members get so-called "Awards Points" for killing members of the government. Killing has to be done for the members in general in order to reach the "warrior" status. They have special training for urban guerilla warfare and they have also attempted to obtain financing and weaponry from foreign governments.
Members of the Aryan Nations commit crimes like bank robberies, bombings and murders and they are very active in various prison outreach programs in order to recruit their members.
There are also a few magazines published by their leaders like Calling Our Nation, National Chronicle and a prison outreach newsletter The Way. Some magazines such as Aryan Revolutionary Front, published in Castro Valley, California, and White Order, out of Aurora, Colorado, are aimed at a more general neo-Nazi readership, but nonetheless promote Skinhead bands and events.
It is reported that the Aryan Nations had connections to Louis Farrakhan`s Nation of Islam to discuss how to divide the nation into two separate racial countries!
2.3. The Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan is either of two distinct secret terrorist organizations in the United States, one founded immediately after the Civil War and lasting until the 1870s, the other beginning in 1915 and continuing to the present.
The 19th-century Klan was originally organized as a social club by Confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1866. They apparently derived the name Ku Klux from the Greek word kyklos, which means circle. The word "Klan" was added because of the alliteration and Ku Klux Klan emerged. The organization quickly became a vehicle for Southern white underground resistance. Klan members sought the restoration of white supremacy through intimidation and violence aimed at the newly enfranchised black freedmen. A similar organization, the Knights of the White Camelia, began in Louisiana in 1867.
In the summer of 1867, the Klan was structured into the "Invisible Empire of the South" at a convention in Nashville, Tennessee, attended by delegates from former Confederate states. The group was presided over by a grand wizard (the Con- federate cavalry general Nathan Bedford Forrest is believed to have been the first grand wizard) and a descending hierarchy of grand dragons, grand titans and grand cyclopses. Dressed in robes and sheets designed to frighten superstitious blacks and to prevent identification by the occupying federal troops, Klansmen whipped and killed freedmen and their white supporters in nightmare raids. The Klan reached its peak between 1868 and 1870. A potent force, it was largely responsible for the restoration of white rule in North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. But Forrest ordered it disbanded in 1869, largely as a result of the group`s excessive violence. Local branches remained active for a time, however,
prompting Congress to pass the Force Act in 1870 and the Ku Klux Klan Act
in 1871.
These bills authorized the president to suspend the writ of habeas corpus, suppress disturbance by force and impose heavy penalties upon terrorist organiza- tions. President Grant was lax in utilizing this authority, although he did send federal troops to some areas, suspend habeas corpus in nine South Carolina counties and appoint commisioners who arrested hundreds of Southerners for con- spiracy. In United States v. Harris in 1882, the Supreme Court declared the Ku Klux Klan Act unconstitutional, but by that time the Klan had pratically dis- appeared.
It disappeared because its original objective ( the restoration of white supremacy throughout the South) had been largely achieved during the 1870s. The need for a secret organization diminished accordingly.
The 20th-century Klan had its roots more directly in the American nativist tradition. It was organized in 1915 near Atlanta, Georgia, by Colonel William J. Simmons, a preacher and promoter of fraternal orders who had been inspired by Thomas Dixon`s book The Clansman (1905) and D.W. Griffith`s film The Birth of a Nation (1915). The new organization remained small until Edward Y. Clarke and Mrs. Elizabeth Tyler brought to it their talents as publicity agents and fund misers. The revived Klan was filled partly by patriotism and partly by a "romantic nostalgia" for the old South, but, more importantly, it expressed the defensive reaction of white Protestants in small-town America who felt threatened by the Bolshevik revolution in Russia and by the large seale immigration of the previous decades that had changed the ethnic character of the American society.
This second Klan peaked in the 1920s, when its membership exceeded 4,000,000 nationally, and profits rolled in from the sale of its memberships, regalia, costumes, publications and rituals. The burning cross became the symbol of the new organi- zation and Klansmen participated in marches, parades and nightime cross burnings all over the country. To the old Klan`s hostility towards blacks the new Klan, which was strong in the Midwest as well as in the South, added bias against Roman Catholics, Jews, and foreigners in general. The Klan increased for the last time in 1928, when Alfred E. Smith, a Catholic, received the Democratic presiden- tial nomination.
During the 1930s the Klan`s membership dropped drastically, and in 1944 the Klan disbanded temporarily. For the next 30 years the Klan was quiet, but it had a resurgence in some Southern states during the 1960s as civil-rights workers attempted to force Southern communities` compliance with the Civil Rights Act of
1964. There were numerous instances of bombings, whippings and shootings in
Southern communities, carried out in secret but apparently the work of Klansmen.
President Lyndon B. Johnson publicly denounced the organization in a nationwide television address announcing the arrest of four Klansmen in connection with the slaying of a civil-rights worker, a white woman, in Alabama.
The Klan was unable to stop the growth of a racial tolerance in the South in the following year. Though the organization continued some of its activities in the late 20th century, cases of Klan violence became more isolated and its membership had declined to a few thousand. The Klan became a chronically fragmented organiza- tion made up of several separate and competing groups, some of which
occasionally entered into alliance with neo-Nazi and other right-wing extremist groups.
That the Ku Klux Klan is still present today and still full of hate show lots of links on the internet. The following paragraph is completely quoted and has nothing to do with my personal opinion! Here, the Southern Cross Militant Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (another splinter of the Ku Klux Klan) expresses what they do not stand for:
"Integration of schools: Prior to the 1954 federal decision to integrate our public school system, the educational standards and literacy rate of White America was exceptional. Following this decision our school began a slow and then rapid decline. Our educational standards were lowered to meet the needs of unmotivated, less intelligent, for lack of a better word, niggers. The most recent example of this is the introduction of "Ebonics" (Nigger English) into California`s public schools.
Affirmative Action: Affirmative action was originally formulated to give the minority, mainly the nigger, in this country an opportunity to advance in life. It was an anti-racist action. Yet, in its very form is racist against the White man (...).
Gun Control: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed". Note here that the 2nd Amendment does not specify the type of arms you may keep and bear. That is a
recent command of the liberals in control and a direct violation of your 2nd Amendment right!
Censorship: The First Amendment guarantees the right of free speech, free press, freedom of religion and the freedom to peaceably assemble.
Jews: The Jewish religion is anti-Christian. The Jews have control over our media, our banks and a large majority of our current government branches. They are enacting laws to further their own desires and not those of the people of the United States of America.
Homosexuals: "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them shall be put to death; since they have committed an abhorrent deed, they have forfeited their live".. Leviticus 20:13. Not only is homosexuality against the teachings of God, it is unnatural and unwanted. It spreads diseases and we will fight to defend our children and ourselves from this abomination".
3. The Pioneer Fund
The Pioneer Fund was established as a charitable trust on February 27, 1937 in New York City. Harry H. Laughlin, Frederick Osborn and the textile magnate Wickliffe Draper were the principle founders (other founders included Malcolm Donald and Vincent R. Smalley). The Fund`s stated purpose was to "improve the character of the American people" by encouraging the procreation of descendants of "white persons" and to provide aid in conducting research on "race betterment with special references to the people of the United States".
The current president of the Pioneer Fund is a man named Harry F. Weyher, a financier and corporate lawyer who eschews interview and runs the Fund without pay or staff from his office in New York. He is assisted in his work by four other "Trustees". All of the men connected to the establishment of the Fund were admirers of Adolf Hitler. They believed unequivocally in white superiority and held that it (i.e. white supremacy) derived from "the evolutionary process". They were motivated to establish the Fund by what they considered to be the overwhelming "success" of the Nazi eugenics policy - a startling defamation, but one which is easily documented. The lives of all the men connected to the founding of the Pioneer Fund exhibit the same Nazi-like attachments and affinities - and this despite the fact that most of them attempted to distance themselves publicly from the National Socialism as an outright political ideology. Indeed, despite their inner ebullience towards Hitler, the men connected to the Fund were conscious of the need NOT to appear too slavishly devoted to facism as a political philosophy. They attempt to distance themselves and their work from its hideous outcome in World War II and the Holocaust.
Even Harry F. Weyher says his groups is not racist. The language in the charter is offensive, says Weyher, only because it was written 55 years ago! To this end, the Fund dropped all references to "whites" and the "white race" from its charter and it
has worked: these moves have helped the Fund regain acceptance in the scientific
community.
Today the Pioneer Fund has regained its foothold in academia, financing projects connected to Harvard, Yale, the University of Delaware, the University of California at Berkeley etc., and the same subterfuge insofar as what the Fund is really all about continues without any apparent letup.
For example, the Fund has tried to hide its connection to Proposition 187 (Califor- nia`s 1994 anti-immigrant initiative). Opponents of this Proposition 187 charged early on that the initiative was partially underwritten by the Pioneer Fund. But the proponents of the measures replied that this was not the truth. And strictly speaking, they were right. There has been no direct connection between the Fund and Prop.187, but the indirect connection has been extensive and pervasive.
There are numerous examples, but take just one: Alan Nelson is one of the authors of Prop.187 and was a driving force behind the measure. During the almost two-year "lead-up" to passage of the measure, Nelson was occupied almost full-time on work connected to the initiative. But who was it who paid him during this time? It was an organization called FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform). And where did FAIR get its income? From the Pioneer Fund!
To say then that the Pioneer Fund did not help bankroll Prop.187 is disingenuous at best, and somewhat deceitful at worst. It is precisely this kind of dissembling and duplicity that contributes so greatly to the murky and even sinister aura which surrounds the activities of the Fund.
The author of the book Nazi Connection, Stephen Kuhl, cautions that the Pioneer Fund was founded by supporters of Hitler`s policies against ethnic minorities and handicapped people and that provided money for introducting Nazi propaganda into the United States; it still sponsors research (and projects) that have striking
similarities to the work that provided the scientific basis for Nazi measures.
One of the most famous examples of controversial Pioneer Fund-supported research was the 1970s work by Nobel Prize-winning physicist William Shockley at Stanford University. Shockley claimed to be able to show that when the raw IQs of
different races are compared, whites are generally smarter than blacks. Additionally, he has suggested that a program be devised to sterilize individuals with a low IQ!
3.1. The Pioneer Fund and "The Bell Curve"
"The Bell Curve", a1994 book written by Charles Murray of the conservative American Enterprise Institute and Richard Herrnstein of Harvard (he died shortly before the book reached print), got an astounding amount of media attention and has sold over 500,000 copies. But the book`s central thesis has little scientific merit. It says that there are measurable genetic differences in intelligence levels between races and this just seeks to make racism socially acceptable. Murray and Herrnstein claim that the IQs of blacks are 15 points lower than the IQs of whites. And this was of most of the mainstream media treated as a fact. This book helped the people to back up their prejudices with "scientific" proof. It is no suprise that the Right has seized upon the book as justification for abolishing welfare and other social programs to the poor. They say if Latinos and blacks are genetically doomed to fail, why should we give them money? The authors are stating that the IQ was "substantially inheritable". Murray is portrayed in the media as a social scientist who has done a lot of research for his book. But most of the research in the book has been backed by people who are motivated by hate rather than human betterment. And one source for the research funding was The Pioneer Fund, that is (as we have already seen) a big booster of eugenics - a philosophy that maintains "genetically unfit" individuals or races are a threat to society.
The person who did most of the research between race and intelligence for "The Bell Curve" was Richard Lynn, a professor of psychology at the University of Ulster. Lynn has received at least $325,000 from the Pioneer Fund for his research! The researchers that provided the data for the claim that the IQs of blacks are 15 points lower than whites - R. Travis Osborne, Frank C.J. McGurk and Audrey Shuey - all
have received money from the Fund. For example, Osborne got about $400,000 from the Fund to do a study on black genetic inferiority that favored the restoration of school segregation!
People who have "certain" prejudices are now strengthened in their way of thinking. Most of the people think that this is science and it can`t be all wrong. You just have
to take the racist beliefs of the Ku Klux Klan or the Aryan Nations, cloak those beliefs in academic robes and you get a bestseller! Unfortunately, all of the academic energy devoted to debunking the book will not reach nearly as many people as the book itself did. All this once again proves the old saying that a lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth puts its boots on!
4. Closing words
When I started my research on this topic, I already knew that there still is racism in the world. I was aware of the fact that a lot of people think whites are better than blacks, Jews and so on. Then I began to work with the Internet and I was really shocked to see things like I have seen on the Internet. I thought that things like that are illegal even when everyone has the right of free speech. I sat there in front of my PC and I felt ashamed to have opened special www-pages. It was sometimes frightening and shocking. There are pages of the Ku Klux Klan with so-called "Online Applications for Membership", where you have to swear, for example, that you "believe in the segregation of the races and have never engaged in an inter-racial relationship". Or I found a "poem" obviously written by a supporter of the Aryan Nations. I added this poem to my essay at the end. There also is a page where you can "learn" 100 truths and 1 lie about whites and blacks. The contents of these 100 truths are all the same: whites are better, blacks commit more crimes and are the worst race and so on! You can read sentences like "Imagine if the United States was an Aryan only nation. Crime would be almost unheard of, welfare would not be needed, unemployment would be near zero. Too bad the U.S. joined the wrong side during Wordl War II". There are cartoons ("if you want something to laugh about") which show blacks in front of burning churches and whites who beat and kick them. I also added one of these cartoons at the end to show the inhumanity and hate of such groups. It is really unbelievable. And these examples are only a few.
But what could be done against such groups? They are more influential as many of us think. It is a very serious problem, not only in the United States. For me it was hard work to write about this topic because it really reached me personally. As long as such groups are around, there cannot be freedom for all human beings equally. There will always be fear of the minorities and threats and crimes against them. It is a sort of new racism, more aggressive and much more violent and at the same time hideous. I really hope that this movement can be reversed or is the gap to wide to bridge?
