Conditionals & Wishes

1. Conditional Type 0 (general truth)

Mówiąc o stanie rzeczy, mający charakter stały zawsze prawdziwy.

2. Conditional Type 1 (real present)

Pewne zdarzenie będzie miało miejsce w przyszłości lub teraz, jeżeli zostanie spełniony pewien warunek.

If używamy w sytuacji kiedy coś być może będzie miało miejsce.

When używamy w sytuacji kiedy coś będzie miało miejsce na pewno.

Chcąc wyrazić prośbę można użyć czas Future Simple w zdaniu podrzędnym warunkowym.

If you will wait a minute, Mr Carrington will be able to see you. = Jeśli pan zechce ...

Chcąc wyrazić niepewność można użyć should w zdaniu podrzędnym warunkowym.

If Paul should turn up, tell him to wait for me. = Jeśli przypadkiem ...

W przypadku użycia should w zdaniu podrzędnym warunkowym można zastosować inwersję.

Should Paul turn up, tell him to wait for me.

3. Conditional Type 2 (unreal present)

Pewne zdarzenie miałoby miejsce teraz lub w przyszłości, gdyby został spełniony pewien warunek.

would/could/might/should	if	Past Simple Past Continuous

If I had a map, I would lend it to you. (But I don't have a map)

If my car was working, I could drive you to the station. (But it isn't working)

If I were you, I would plant some trees round the house. (udzielanie rady)

Można użyć were zamiast was w zdaniu podrzędnym warunkowym dla wszystkich osób.

If Andrew was/were taller, he could be a basketball player.

W przypadku użycia were można zastosować inwersję.

Were Andrew taller, he could be a basketball player.

Chcąc wyrazić prośbę można użyć would w zdaniu podrzędnym warunkowym.

If you would tell me what you want for your dinner, I would cook it for you = Gdybyś zechciał ...

4. Conditional Type 3 (unreal past)

Pewne zdarzenie miałoby miejsce w przeszłości gdyby został spełniony pewien warunek.

would/could/might/should + have + past participle	if	Past Perfect Past Perfect Continuous

I made a big mistake because I wasn't careful. If I had been more careful, I wouldn't have made such a big mistake.

Można zastosować inwersję.

Had I been more careful, I wouldn't have made such a big mistake.

5. Inne spójniki łączące zdanie podrzędne warunkowe ze zdaniem nadrzędnym.

I will water the plants provided (that)/providing (that) I have time this afternoon.

So long as/As long as you promise to be back by midnight, you can go to the party.

Suppose/Supposing you were fired, what would you do?

He agreed to work on Saturdays on condition that he was paid overtime.

6. Wishes

wish/if only + Past Simple/Past Continuous (mówiąc o sytuacji teraźniejszej, wyrażając życzenie aby było inaczej niż jest)

I wish/If only I knew his address = It's a pity I don't know his address.

I wish/If only he was coming with us = It's a pity he isn't coming with us.

Można użyć were zamiast was po wish/if only dla wszystkich.

I wish/If only he were/was more careful.

wish/if only + Past Perfect (mówiąc o sytuacji przeszłej, wyrażając żal, że coś miało miejsce, bądź też odwrotnie, że nie miało miejsca coś czego pragnęliśmy)

I wish/If only I hadn't spent so much money = It's a pity I spent so much money.

wish/if only + would (wyrażając pragnienie zmiany czyjegoś postępowania, zmiany sytuacji lub w prośbach)

I wish/If only he wouldn't give me so much work.

I wish/If only it would stop raining.

I wish/If only you would help me.

Po zaimkach I & we należy użyć could zamiast would.

I wish/If only I could travel abroad.
