5 Read the text and answer the questions below.
My favourite painting is Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. The lady in the painting has an unusual expression on her face. I like the fact that you can't tell if she is smiling or not. I wonder what's she thinking and if she is sad or happy.
I'm also interested in the history behind the painting. Leonardo da Vinci painted it in the early sixteenth century. In 1516 he took it to France and sold it to King Francis for 4,000 gold coins. The painting was put in the Louvre museum in Paris. In 1911, somebody stole the painting. At first no one noticed that the painting was missing. The people who worked at the museum thought that the official museum photographer was taking pictures of the painting in his studio. After a few days, they realised he didn't have it and that the painting was gone. The police questioned many people, including the artist Pablo Picasso.
More than two years later, an Italian, Vincenzo Perugia, tried to sell the Mona Lisa to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, for $100,000. The police arrested him and Perugia confessed that he stole the painting because of patriotism. He thought such a famous painting by a famous Italian should belong to Italy, not France.
