CONTRASTIVE GRAMMAR OF ENGLISH AND POLISH - SPRING 2010
Year 2 (2nd semester)
Instructor: dr. Anna Ścibior-Gajewska
Site: sites.google.com/site/grammarfiles
Office hours: Monday 15.00-16.30;
Objectives:
Contrastive Grammar is an advanced course designed to acquaint the students with the most important similarities and differences between selected English and Polish syntactic structures. The course is biased towards applied contrastive analysis, with an emphasis placed on the phenomenon of language transfer and the areas of English syntax which call for special treatment in the classroom.
Assignments:
Reading assignments and exercises will be given every week. As the course is very intensive, it is essential that students keep up with the assignments. Students will be asked to read the chapters assigned from the textbook before the class at which the new material is discussed, and to download and print the necessary materials.
Requirements:
1. Attendance: Attendance is critical. One absence will be allowed during the whole semester. Any student who misses another class will be required to see the teacher during her office hours to make up for the absence within two weeks.
2. Class participation: Regular preparation of assignments and participation in class discussions is expected. Active participation and showing knowledge of the discussed subjects may benefit the student in that s/he will gain zaliczenie more easily.
Assessment:
The "zaliczenie" mark will be given after a short conversation, covering the course material; the conversation will include one theoretical question and one error-correction task;
The final exam will be held during the finals in June. A minimum of 60% is required to pass the final exam.
