I.K. Start ll - Norway

Contributed by subscriber, Phil Barber. Phil observed the following practice of the I.K. Start ll youth team who plays in the Norwegian First Division. Phil was invited to progress the session, which he did with the practice in diagram 7. While the practices are very simple, they are extremely effective and were practiced at game speed and for over 30 minutes. Phil noted that the players had an extremely businesslike and enthusiastic attitude during practice.

Finishing From Cut-Backs A passes to B. B dribbles inside the penalty area toward the end-line and cuts the ball back toward the penalty spot. C finishes with a side-foot shot in the corner of the goal. Have three or four players in each position.

Coaching Points  Quality passes from A and B  B should have his head up so he can see C's position  Quality of shot from C - he should `pass' the ball into the corner of the goal  C should be aware of the position of the goalkeeper

	Finishing From a Lay-Off A plays a lofted pass to B. B lays the ball into the path of incoming C. C finishes with a side-foot shot into the corner of the goal.
Coaching Points  Quality of the lofted pass is critical  The lay-off should be into the path of incoming C so that he can shoot the ball without breaking his stride  C should adjust his body shape depending on the lay-off

	Progression A feeds the ball through the legs of B to C. C plays a cross-field pass to D. C and B then advance on goal. D lays the ball off to E. E passes one touch to running F. F delivers a cross or a pull-back to B or C who finishes on goal.
Coaching Points  All previous coaching points  It may be necessary for B and C to lay the ball off for each other in order to create a good shooting opportunity  Quality of passes, crosses and lay-offs are of paramount importance to the practice
