Letter of Application

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing to apply for the job advertised in `The Time' for the position of Hotel Manager in Aspen resort.

I am a 20-year-old Polish citizen, currently living in Ostróda. But it does not mean I would not be ready to move to another country, if necessary.

I am student of Teacher Training College in Ostróda. The main subject of my studies is English in all its aspects. Furthermore, I have been studying Russian for five years and French since October.

I believe that I am well suited to work as a Hotel Manager. I know two foreign languages on an intermediate level. Moreover, I am a responsible and well-organized person. I can learn quickly. I also like working with other people.

Your resort is one of the most popular in the world, and has visitors from different countries every year. An opportunity of meeting them interests me much.

I hope you will consider my application and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Anna Kowalska

A letter of advice

A letter of advice in response to a letter requesting advice,

from an embassy worker to a foreign student studying and working in Poland

who deals with some trouble (flat, language, work, loneliness)

Dear Mr Bracho,

Thank you for your letter requesting advice about your difficulties in adjusting to your new surroundings. I understand that it is not easy to settle in a foreign country, and I hope the following suggestions will be of some help to you.

You mentioned that your main difficulty is to find a flat. Unfortunately, this is still a big problem of young couples with children in Poland. Therefore I feel the best course of action would be to contact immigration office, follow the advertisements in the press carefully, and talk to people.

That learning Polish makes you many trouble I do not doubt is truth. Our language is really one of the most difficult in the world. At first, I would suggest that you all enroll for a professional Polish course. I would also recommend sending children to a Polish school as a way of meeting Polish friends.

In your letter, you also refer to your worries about coping with the work. I would advise you and your wife to advertise yourselves in the press and send the xero-copies of your diplomas to the firms working for which you are interested in. I strongly believe that with your excellent qualifications you do not need to worry.

I hope that these suggestions will be useful. Finally, may I recommend you joining some clubs and societies of Polish Argentineans? It would be a good opportunity of meeting people with similar problems and some kind of experience.

I would like to wish you good luck with living in Poland. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further questions.

Yours sincerely,

XYZ

A letter applying for a place

A letter applying for a place on the course, stating the reasons for choosing the particular college.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to apply for a place on the intensive course for foreign students, offered by your college beginning July, 2006.

I am a 23-year-old Polish citizen, currently living in Cracow. For several years I have been studying English in Poland. Since graduating from Teacher Training College in 2005, I have been searching for a job as the teacher of English at local schools.

I believe that I am well-suited to a career in this field of education, and I am keen to continue raising my skills. However, currently I lack the formal language qualifications and training necessary to progress beyond my present level of English. Your course would give me a good basis for further study, as well as improving my listening and speaking skills.

Your college has an extremely good reputation in the field of English courses. Furthermore, the facilities which you offer appear to be ideal.

Please find enclosed a copy of my CV. I hope you will consider my application and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Marta Kowalska (Miss)

A letter to a local magazine

A letter to a local magazine, giving details of the performance and requesting that they help to publicize the event.

Dear Editor,

I am teacher of English at the Grammar school in Warsaw. My drama class is planning to stage a Shakesperanean tragedy, which will take place on 30th June. As the main organizer of the performance, I am writing on behalf of my students to request that you be so kind as to help us to publicize the event.

To begin with, “Mackbeth” performance starts at 12 am at the local Cultural Center on Polska Street. Visitors are expected to come earlier. Next, allow me to suggest that the journalists could be invited to report on the event, and to interview the actors and members of the audience.

In all conscience, such publicizing would advertise our school and attract more potential students. Therefore, I would be delighted if you would consider my request, and I would like to thank you for your time and cooperation in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Marta Kowalska (Miss)

Letter of application

Permanent teacher of English required for small, exclusive, private school.

Students are aged 15-18.

Send details of experience and qualification to Dr J.M. Smith's address.

Do not send a CV.

Dear Dr Smith,

I am writing to apply for the position of teacher of English for the school year beginning September, 2006.

I successfully completed an English language course at the Student Travel School in Oxford (2003), and gained a professional diploma at Teacher Training College in Ostróda (2005).

I am a native Polish speaker but I am also fluent in English. While studying at Teacher Training College in Ostróda, I experienced a great deal of teaching practice in various types of schools, over a period of 2 years.

I believe that I would be an ideal candidate for the position you have outlined as I have much experience in teaching students aged 15-18. Moreover, I was noted by my teaching practice supervisor for good methodological and organizational skills.

I am particularly interested in the position as your school has an extremely good reputation in the field of ELT, and the facilities which you offer to the staff appear to be ideal.

I am available for an interview at your convenience. I am confident I will prove to be an asset to your school. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Yours sincerely,

Marta Kowalska

Dear Kate ,

I'm writting to you because I have to change my plans.

I can't take you from the airport tomorrow because I have a very important exam. Sorry, I forgot to write about it in the last letter.
Don't worry, take a taxi and come to XXX Street. It will take about 15 minutes.
I have planned your stay in my country. On Friday we are going to go to the XXX Exihitbion and then to the party. Next week I want to take you to XXX. You should see this city. We can also go to XXX and see polish mountains.
You should take some warm clothes because the weather is rather cold. I hope we will spend the best winter holiday time in our life.

    Hope to see you soon.

Love
XYZ

Dear John

I'm writing to you to apologize for my absence at the airport to you. When you came to Poland I must go to a hospital with my sister.

You can take a taxi to my house from the airport or if you want, you can take a bus number 501. If you take the taxi you will go for about 20 minutes and by bus about 40.

I'm still thinking what we can do in Poland. We can go skiing to CXXX because in Poland we don't have too many good ski areas. If you don't like skiing, we can travel to some city in my country, for example to XXX or XXX.

You should take warm clothes to Poland because we have very cold winters.

I'm very happy thinking that you are going to come..

Best wishes
XYZ
