Unit 1 P5

How government policies can affect society

Civil Disobedience

Rosa Parks is a great example for this as she stood up to the white majority for her rights and what the president said but did not allow, like the right to vote and to be able to sit anywhere on a bus. This means that she stood up against the policies that the US government had created and changed life for the coloured minority, this happened because she did not agree with the way stuff was at that time so she stood up against the rules, so this is one thing that can happen if people don’t agree with policies that the government have put in place.

Demonstrations, meetings and protests

A good example for this is the London G20 protests; this is where lots of people gathered around the bank of Scotland in London to protest about fairness as it has always been the rich rewarded when things are going well and the poor get punished when things are going bad. This had expected thousands of people and was to be a quiet protest, but after looking through footage of the protest you can see that it is not all quiet and peaceful as a riot broke out the worst of it was when the police clashed with those who were seeking violence, in the end things were changed but not before violence and vandalism had accord, this proves that things can change if you stand up to the policies that are in place.

Picketing

Royal mail staff strike over pay and jobs, 20,000 members of staff were involved, because of this 20 offices were affected there was a massive amount of mail to get out and because of this Royal Mail had no choice but to raise the pay so workers would come back into work to clear the mail but royal mail issued a notice saying that this back lot may not be cleared by Christmas, for the workers who protested this was a successful strike as they got what they wanted after the strike.

Sit Ins

The Newbury bypass is a good one as people did not want this and because trees had to be removed the people who did not want this sat up in the trees to stop this yet again this being a success, with the bypass not being created.

Speech

Parliament debates about rising tuition fees, at the end of a strong argument the eyes to the right won the vote of 323 for rising university fees this is the opposite of most students wishes but this helps universities get more educational equipment, I think that more people will be less interested in going university because of this rise in fees, which means that the students who put their faith in the labour party have been let down.
