CHARITY
On January 12th, 2010, an earthąuake struck Haiti with appalling

Very soon afterwards, celebrities from all walks of life had started planning what they could do to help the people of this impoverished, Caribbean island.
Several artists decided to release charity CDs. In the UK, TV impresario, Simon Cowell, producer of and judge on several TV talent shows, decided
to produce a version of the REM song, Eveiybody Hurts. 7.2._
Even morę impressively, he managed to convince somc of the biggest stars of the musie world to join them. Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney and Robbie Williams were just three of the many stars singing on the song which reached number one in the charts. In the USA, a different group of stars recorded a new version of We Are The World, first released twenty-five years previously to help Ethiopia.
Simon Cowell wasn’t the only reality TV star to get involved. American Idol has a regular charity show called Idol Gives Back. It was soon decided that the 2010 show would be largely in aid of Haiti. The previous year’s winner,
Kris Allen, flew to Haiti to help with the aid effort. 7.3._. Viewers
were also encouraged to ring in and offer money to help.

In the fashion world, Naomi Campbell helped to put on a special Fashion For Relief show in New York and London. Fashion For Relief is an annual
event that Naomi had helped to create in 2005. 7.4._. For the
2010 event, 140 top designers donated outfits which were modelled by some of the biggest names in the industry. Unfortunately, the event was overshadowed by the death shortly bcforehand of the fashion designer, Alexander McQueen.
It seemed to some that the people of Haiti had been forgotten in the grief at the loss of a personal friend but the event still raised important funds for the earthąuake victims.
The most successful event, in terms of the amount raised, was a TV telethon which took place on January 22nd. Stars sang songs, gave speeches and manned telephones to which members of the public rang with their offers of donations. The total number of viewers in the USA alone was an astonishing 83 million and, by the next day, $58 million had been raised.

and DVD of the acts performing on the show. The CD became the top selling itunes download in cighteen countries.
