9b. Fashionably wide bucket style templers,

worn with caul, veil and padded roli (Fig 14).

This larger version may be pinned to a caul with cut-outs to draw the plaits through (Fig 10).

10. Cut-away caul, early 15th century a. A close-fitting cap (back view). It provides_ support for large templers (Fig 9b) or separate horns (Fig 11), which are pinned to it. It allows the plaits to be drawn out at the sides. The area over the forehead can be decorated with a lattice pattern. It is held in place by tapes which are threaded through loops at the napę and tied.

b. Pattern. Scalę up the pattern and try out a toile for fit. Cut out the pieces in linen, and in silk for the outer layer. Join the sides to the centre section along AB. Make up the silk covering to match, tum in the raw edges, and stitch or bind all round before adding the loops and ties (Methods, Figs 9, 13).

Pin the templers or horns to the cap and drape the veil to conceal the structure.
