Sprinkle 60g/1/2 cup borax in the bottom of bins or nappy pails to inhibit mould and bacteria growth that can cause odours.
Carpets
Just as salt helps to restore the colour of dark laundry, it also helps to bring out the colour in carpeting, while at the same time. removing dirt. Sprinkle 30-60g/1/4 - 1/2 cup of salt (depending on the size of your rug or carpet). let it sit for 15-30 minutes, and then vacuum. You can also altemate between salt and comstarch. The instructions are the same.
Carpets - dcodorizing
If your carpet is holding onto pet or other odours. sprinkle the carpet with baking soda before you vacuum. If convenient, let the sprinkle stand for at least fifteen minutes before vacuuming.
For a fragrant carpet sprinkle try the following recipe: mix 175g/11/2 cups baking soda together with 20 drops of your favourite essential oils. You can also use about 60g/1/2 cup of comstarch in place of some of the baking soda if you wish a different consistency of sprinkle. Place the baking soda in your mixing Container and distribute the drops of oil. one at a time, here and there. throughout the powder. Don't just lay them on top of the powder in a clump. With the back of a spoon or other appropriate tool. blend the oil(s) well into the baking soda. Pour some of the powder out onto a piece of paper and use this as a funnel to pour into a sprinkle Container -recycled jars with holes for sprinkling are good for this purpose.
During flea or bug season, use 60g/1/2 cup borax and 175g/11/2 cup baking soda. or use 115g/1 cup diatomaceous earth (not the kind used for pool filters - check the organie gardening resources in your area). plus 115g/1 cup baking soda. Diatomaceous earth (D.E.) is a superb natural product with many household and garden uses.
