V1STULA VALLEY BETWEEN THE OUTLETS OF DUNAJEC AND BREŃ RIVERS
HISTORY AND METHODS OF THE STUDY
At the beginning oi the present century Łomnicki (1903) and Romer (1911) distinguished the fundamental terrace forms and discussed their structure as well as the development of the right-hand-side of the, valley. Walczowski (1968, 1972) characterized the northem part of the valley. The entire section was synthetically presented by Starkel (1967, 1972) and Sokołowski (19Sla, in press).
Hydrology and sediment load transportation in the Vistula channel were studied by Punzet (1972, 1981), Klimek (1979, 1983) and Kociszew-ska-Musiał (1969).
Archeologicał and historical studies on the settling in the valley (Ca-balska et dl. 1974, 1975; Mateszew 1974) are also helpful when the valley erolution is discussed.
This paper is based on the valley mapping in the scalę 1 : 25 000 and on the already published geological maps and aerial photographs. In order to determine lithology of sediments, granulometric and petrographic studies of the gravel fraction (according to Rutkowski’s method, 1977) as well as mineralogicał ones in the case of fine sediments (madas and rnuds) have be en performed. The archival drillings and cartogra phical materials have be en utilized. The latter are especially useful when re-constructing the Vistula channel changes during the last 300 years.
This paper was realized and financially supported by the project MR 1-25 “Changes ot the geogra phical environment of Poland”.
LOCATTON OF THE STUDY AREA
The study reach of the Vistula river is located in the northem part of the Sandomierz Basin between the outlets of the Dunajec and Breń ri-vers, i.e. between 160 and 212 km of the river course. The valley width
