EXPLOITING THE PROPERTIES OF WOODCARVING

Admittedly, clay or plaster builc on an armaturo can produce the same shapes as those mentioned above. However, wood produces its own effect, partly because the materiaÅ‚ has a different psychological and physical appeal and partly because the process of working with wood aliows you to deviate from (and improve on) the original plan in ways which other materials would not suggest (Figs 14.13, 14.14).

Pcople who work with wood do it with love. This is often quite enough to give the sculpture a special impact. Furthermore, if whilc working the carver really feels the magie, the tenderness, the power. or whatever other sensation the shape is meant to convey, it will probably afFect viewers in the same way.

The least that can be said abour an absrract work of art is that it is itself; but then, the same could be said of a rosc.
