Configuring Your Database for Basic Backup and Recovery

This section explains how to set up your database to take advantage of Oracle suggested backup strategies.

To take maximum advantagc of Oracle Database features that automatically manage backup and rccovcry files and opcrations, configurc your database as follows:

■Use a fast rccovcry arca, which automatcs storagc managcmcnt for most backup-rclatcd files, and spccify it as an archived redo log file dcstination.

■Run the database in ARCHIVELOG modę so you can perform online backups and have data rccovcry options such as complcte and point-in-timc media recovcry.

You must also set several policies governing which files are backcd up, what format is used to storę backups on disk, and whcn files become eligible fordelction.
