INTRODUCTORY

The landform list used in the detailed geomorphological map has been prepared by Professor M. Klimaszewski acting in co-operation with Dr. S. Gilewska, Mrs. M. Klimkowa and Dr. L. Starkel at the Department of Geomorphology and Hydrography of Mountains and Uplands of the Institute of Geography, Polish Academy of Sciences. This landform list developed by the completion of the ‘List of forms and signs used in the Geomorphological Map of Poland’ which was worked out by M. Klimaszewski in 1956 and published in ‘The Principles of the Geomorphological Survey of Poland* (Przegląd Geograficzny, 28, Supplement, Warszawa 1956) as well as of the landform lists enclosed in the detailed geomorphological maps constructed in different countries, especially by H. Annaheim, N. W. Baszenina, L. Berry, P. Bethune, B. Bulla, T. Czudek, J. Demek, J. Dresch, J. Franz, R. Galon, J. Gellert, F. Gullentops, F. Joly, M. Luknis, P. Macar, J. Mam-merickx, E. Mazur, S. Mozer, Nakano, A. Pissart, Robitaille, R. Savigear, R. Seiffert, Sorret, A. Spiridonow, F. Tada and J. Tricart.

Both the scope of the landform list’s content and its composition meets the reąuirement clearly defined by members of the Subcommission on Geomorphological Mapping IGU during their first meeting in Kraków (3-12.V.1962) and during their second meeting in Strasbourg (7-9.XII.1962). According to this reąuirement:

1.    The arrangement of the geomorphological map’s key is a genetical-chronolo-gical arrangement.

2.    The geomorphological contents, i.e. the landforms are plotted on contour lines by means of multicoloured signs true to scalę.

3.    Both the signs and the colours inform of the morphographic and morpho-metric data as well as of the origin (agent, process) and age of every landform.

4.    In case of structural and depositional landforms the structural (lithological) data are shown by special signs.

5.    Symbols indicate some processes and micro-landforms.

6.    Both the contents and sdgns were adopted to the detailed maps* scalę

(1 :10,000, 1 : 100,000).

7.    According to these principles the detailed geomorphological map

a)    informs of the situation and mutual relation of the landforms whose ap-pearence, dimensions, origin, structure and age are known,

b)    includes morphographic, morphometric, morphogenetical, morphostructural and morphochronological data,

c)    depicts the complete relief and permits its history to be reconstructed and its further development tendencies to be deciphered,
