second's place, and then down to the iead. This is called “bunting down," and the ropes are singled out thus: having struck his last blow behind after a certain beli, it is evident that at the next blow that beli will want to strike after him; he must, tberefore, drop down into second’s place over the other beli; and then going to the lead, he will lead by pulling o(T at the opposite end to the bindermost of the other bells.

lt may be here observed that when any one beli leads, it will follow the last of the other bells at w bat is termed the “opposite end." For instance, when a beli leads at hand-stroke, it will follow the beli that strikes last in the previous change, whieb beli will have just been pułled off at baek-srroke. In the same way, when a beli leads at back-stroke, it will follow the last of the other bells pułled off at hand-stroke, and in either of 1hese cases a beli is said “to lead off the other at the opposite end." We may imagine either ringer, shown on the frontispiece, to be ihus leading, for the position in w'hich either man, his ropę, and beli, is drawn is that of one leading off the other at the opposite end.

In the foregoing explanation I have freąuentły used the expression to '• strike after" another beli. When one heli im-mediately follows another it is said to “ strike after it; thereare, however, several other terms which are used to express exactly the same tbing. Thus the words “strike after "strike over," and £lstrike on to'' all mcan follow next lo another beli. The expression to “ take ” a beli is also sometimes used when a morę definite allusion is madę to the beli which has to be followed.

The huntiog course on three bells can be accomplished so easily from observations madę on paper, that it is not much use practising it; but it gives the learner a good opportunity of grasping sonie idea of what he has to look for on the ropes, and bow he has to sort them out.

There isa difficulty met with at tbeoutsetin ringingehanges which is a very serious one to learners, namely, the management
