Extra Credit Project
Fall 2003
Detailed Design of Transmission Shaft
Due date: Friday, December 5, 2003
Draft: November 20, 2003
1
Objectives
The objective of this project is to develop detailed drawings for the two shaft stubs and intervening tube of a trans-
mission shaft. An assembly drawing of the shaft with gear and sprocket fitted appears at the end of this assignment.
Detail drawings of the gear, sprocket, and the two bearings are also provided. For the purposes of the assignment, you
may assume that the shaft operates at 1008 RPM and is intended to transmit 177 horsepower.
2
Grading
This assignment is worth a maximum of 10 points, which will be added to your class score (out of 100) after the class
has been curved. Your actual grade will depend on how complete the resulting detail drawings are and how well you
support your choice of each dimension. Fifty percent of the grade will be based on the drawings and fifty percent on
the supporting arguments.
3
Requirements
Your completed assignment must include the following four items:
1. a detail drawing of the shaft tube, with all dimensions and tolerances indicated.
2. a detail drawing of the sprocket end stub, with all dimensions and tolerances indicated.
3. a detail drawing of the gear end stub, with all dimensions and tolerances indicated.
4. a separate document explaining the rationale behind every dimension and tolerance that you select.
The completed design must conform to the following specifications:
1. transmitted power = 177 horsepower
2. distance between gear and sprocket centerlines = 36 inches
3. gear, sprocket, and associated bearings are removable
4. gear and sprocket are indexed to the shaft stubs using keys and keyways
5. keys and keyways must be compatible with the 177 HP requirement
