SMV3W structure after heat treatment

Agent C1

M = 100

Agent C1

M = 500

The characteristics of this grade are exceptional in length and
width as well. The so fine structure and the cleanness of this
grade allow high polish level (optical polish).

X38CrMoV5 (1.2343)

Structure after heat treatment

Agent C1

M = 50

Agent C1

M = 1000

This 1.2343 grade is not conformed
because of its rough structure, the
heterogeneity and the hardness level
generated. This product is not suita-
ble for plastic moulds applications.
The use of such a quality can lead to
big problems with the cavity inserts
such as breaks, fails, wears, corro-
sion problems, low hardness…

All the metallurgical data are in line with what you can expect
from a 1.2343 grade for plastic moulds applications. This is a
good metallurgical product

Be careful a steel can hide an other one! The graph below is showing that under the name 1.2343 you can find a wide varie-
ty of products with good ones and bad ones. The EN norm is setting up a minimum level to call a steel 1.2343 and then
allows some manufacturers de put on the market some steels they can refer to 1.2343 but with so poor requirements that
they cannot be accepted in the plastic mould making industry.

The French car industry with its standardization comity CNOMO has decided to explore deeper the case by setting more
criterias than just a chemical analysis. Among others, the cleanness of the steel has been quantified.

Among CNOMO criterias it is obvious that SMV3 is a product offering the best properties for the plastic industry.

When Aubert et Duval is offering an ESR version of SMV3 they put the level extremely high with an exceptional quality dedi-
cated to the most difficult applications in this industry. Indeed the unique remelting process Aubert et Duval is using impro-
ves the mechanical properties to the highest level that no other 2343 ESR steel on the market can reach. Under the ESR
name some poor grades are sold to higher prices not offering the final user the quality he is expecting. We are even then
far away from what you can achieve with our regular SMV3.

TEMPER ACCORDING TO HARDNESS REQUIRED

Martensitic stainless steel with exceptional
corrosion resistance as well as high hard-
ness level, good resistance to abrasion and
easy machinability.
The maxiumm hardness 56/57 HRC can be
achieved wheter with a temper at 180°c or
a double temper at 500°C. The first solution
has to be favorized when the goal is to
achieve the best resistance to corrosion.
The second is more when operation condi-
tions are exeeding 450°C or when a coating
process is applied at a temperature over
500°C.
This grade is also excellent for induction
heat treating. In this case it is recommen-
ded that

the metal base sould be treated for 900 to
1200 MPa.
For some applications it is possible to ache-
ive hardness 58/59 HRC without any loss in
the resistance to corrosion, by elevation of
the austenitizing temperature to 1050 °C if
in the mean time the temper is at 180 °C or
at 1075 °C for a double temper at 500°C. In
both cases it is necessary to make a cryo-
genecic treatment ( -75/-80 °C) between
harden and temper. For this type of treat-
ment it is recommended to ask our engi-
neers the best way to go.

Welding not recommended.

LAMAC range of products:

Reduce your injection moulding costs.

Our days, OEM are trying to reduce the cost of injection moulds by any mean. The favour is given to the direct reduc-
tion of the mould price by purchasing moulds in low cost countries.

By making a separation between the purchasing price of the mould and the cost of running a mould the consequen-
ces are dramatic: the mould is realized at the minimum cost without any research of optimisation for cycle time, the
cost reduction obtained by buying a mould in a low cost country is melting like snow
on the sun as soon as production is going on.

The technical performance of moulds realized in Asia has nothing to compare with
moulds made in EEC. Only the price is a criteria for the choice without taking in
account maintenance cost, repairing and the performance of the mould.

Because of our long experience in selling high grade mould and tool steel and alloys
and because of innovation we have always been a leader with SP300, SP400, X15TN,
Lugand Aciers has developed a high technology copper based alloy leading to a glo-
bal reduction of moulding a plastic part.

Lamac range is offering the following:
• Hardness is similar to a prehardened steel (40 HRC:equivalent to 1.2711,1.2714 )
• Excellent for polishing or texturing,
• Thermal conductivity 3 to 4 times higher than steel
• Better resistance to corrosion than 1.2711 and 1.2714.

By replacing steel with Lamac in cavities you can obtain immediately as up as 40% reduction in cycle time.

A true example has made possible to compare cycle time between a 2738 cavity mould and a Lamac cavity mould.

Results are impressive.

We have made a video of such an example you can view or download from our
web site: lugand-aciers.com. This video will show you in details the money you
can save by using Lamac products.

Possible treatments

Resistance to wear and corrosion can be
improved with surface treatments. It is pos-
sible to proceed with hard chromium pla-

ting, nickel plating on LAMAC 4O HRC.

Applications

LAMAC 40 HRC is a copper Beryllium
based alloy specially developped for plastic
mould industry. The combination between
remarkable thermal conductivity and hard-
ness is providing:
- shorter cycle times
- a better stability in the geometry of the
moulded parts
- better resistance of the split line

- excellent resistance to corrosion.
LAMAC 40 HRC is offering a wear resistan-
ce and hardness similar to many tool steels,
on the top of that its thermal conductivity is
4 times higher than steel and comparable
with aluminium. It can be used for mould
parts, cavitys, core, inserts directly in
contact with plastic.

Safety

Breathing particules or smokes of beryllium can cause lung deseases. For LAMAC this risk
is low because of the low contain of beryllium in our alloy.
Most of regular machining operation are not causing any increase of beryllium contain in the
air.

Eventhough for machining operation which can cause dust or smoke such as grinding,
polishing, welding and EDM machining a cleaver vaccum system, well located will prevent
smoke or dust to contaminate the working area. In Europe the higher rate of beryllium in the
air is 2 µg/m

Machining

Except for EDM parameters, other machi-
ning datas remain similar than the ones you
are using for 1.2711 or 1.2714. For EDM
because of the copper base, it is better to try

to work with graphite.
For wire EDM machining times are longer.

GENERAL TOLERANCE (MOP15CO REV.11)

Extra thickness

Extra thickness for tool steels:

Products straight from rolling or forging are showing on their surfa-
ces a superficial decarburization with heterogeneities as well surfa-
ce irregularities (crust).

So,consequently it is necessary to remove by milling a certain quan-
tity of material uniformly from both sides. NFA 45, 103 and NFA 104
norms are giving indications about the minimum thickness to remo-

ve according sections of products wheteher they are flat, roud or
square.

As an indication we are giving some values in the following tables.

Remark: the non elimination of those surface defects can cause big
problems during heat treatment ( cracking, deformation, breaking)
or even after heat treatment.

Exemple:
Milled plate 800 x 800 x 30 mm (D = 1131 mm)

Flatness tolerance = 1131 mm x (0,08/100) = 0,9 mm

Since thickness is between 20 and 35 mm, this tolerance is mutli-
pied by a coeeficient of 2: 2 x 0,9 = 1,8 mm.
