TORUN

The place I would like to describe is Toruń, city and port in central Poland on the Vistula River. I visited it last weekend and I was under the impression of it.
Toruń has been famous for its honey-cakes and gingerbread ever since the Middle Ages. The town is also an industrial centre, with factories producing chemicals, textiles, machinery, tools, armatures, and furniture.
As well as many Renaissance and Baroque buildings, the old city still has ancient gates and walls along the river. Prominent landmarks include the rebuilt town hall, containing a museum; the churches of St John, Our Lady, and St James; the ruins of a castle of the Teutonic Knights; an ethnographic museum housed in a former arsenal; the Pomeranian Theatre; and fine Gothic and Baroqe townhouses. In Toruń is a university named after the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, born in the city.
Toruń was chartered in 1333. The treaties of 1411 and 1466 signed in the city placed the Teutonic Knightsunder Polish rule. In 1595 and 1645 religious synods were held in the city.
Toruń was under German rule for most of the 19th century and during the World War II, when it was called Thorn. From 1919 to 1939 Toruń was the capital of The Polish province of Pomorze.

SIEDLCE

I live in Siedlce - a town in the east of Poland. There live about eighty thousand people . I wasn't born in Siedlce - I was born in Warsaw but I have lived in Siedlce for sixteen years. I will try to describe my town a little.
Siedlce is situated on the small Muchawka river in the east part of województwo mazowieckie in the region called Podlasie. Several years ago there was the main tourist and communicating trail and Siedlce was developing fast but now the town isn't such as important place and it is developing more slowly. The town isn't beautiful for me - there is a lot of litter on the streets, streets are often destroyed, there are many old, ugly, non-renovated buildings. In Siedlce there are some interesting places like a town hall called “Jacek”, which is situated in the centre of my town. A long time ago there was a marketplace opposite the town hall but know there is a small square, where people often come to relax. Near the centre, on the Konarskiego Street there is a park with Ogiński palace, which was built by duchess Anna Ogińska. It is one of the most attractive places in our town, where the young as well as adults like walking and resting. In the park there is a pond. I think that it is good that in Siedlce there is a place like it because when you are tired or feel nervous you may go for a walk, calm your nerves and have contact with nature. In the park there is also a playground, where we can often see children playing and shouting. In Siedlce there is also the museum, where we can see many pictures, photos and interesting documents connected with history of Siedlce.
In Siedlce young people spent their free time on the disco, in the pubs or walking and shopping. In the town there are too few concerts of famous bands I think, so only sometimes we may enjoy this type of entertainment. Siedlce has its own local TV called Catel, which often shows us important events for the inhabitants. We have also some local newspapers like „Tygodnik Siedlecki” or „Echo Podlasia”. In Siedlce there is also the catholic radio „Katolickie Radio Podlasia”.
In my town there are several primary schools, some high schools and one academy. Students and other inhabitants of Siedlce and people living near the town can use the library, which is situated in the town hall in the centre of the city.
In Siedlce there are also some industrial plants like „Drosed” or „Mostostal”, which are known in the whole Poland.
I think that several years ago Siedlce was more beautiful place than it's today. Before The Second War there were a lot of rich Jews and other people in the town - then Siedlce had its own theatre, some breweries and, for example, knives' factory, which belonged to my grandfather' father. When I watch pictures from these times I see beautiful trees, clean streets, nice buidings. I think that Siedlce is becoming more and more dirty and ugly. I think that it's good that the pope will come to Siedlce in June because thanks to it there is more money for renovating some buildings and streets.
I'm glad that I live in Siedlce instead of living in a village but if I had a choice I would like to move to akaniec bigger town or city.

CHEŁMNO

Chełmno is a city in north of Poland. It is located 45 kilometers from Toruń. There live about 22 thousand people. It is interesting for foreign visitors - numerous people call it `Cracov of the north'. The twon is well-known for the old town and friendly inhabitants.
What is unusual is the fact, that Chełmno is situated on nine hills - like Rome. From the city you can see Vistula River Valley. Very interesting are gothic biuldings, museums, monuments and churches.
Chełmno is one of the three cities in Europe, where all old city is surrounded by original fortifications. Moreover, in Europe are only three cities with completely medieval fortifications.
One of the most interesting place in Chełmno is museum of old weapon. There are showed swords, guns and machine-guns. That is really interesting - also for women.
In Chełmno are not big hotels. But we have got hostels and rooms in pivate houses - it is often cheaper and more comfortable.
I wrote about Chełmno for two reasons. Firstly, it is not big city with skycrapers, offices and a lot of cars. Secondly, it is very beautiful and has interesting history and a lot of relics.
Summary, I think sometimes small cities are better than this big like Warsaw and Cracov. In Poland we have got a huge number of small and wonderful cities, but I strongly recommended Chełmno for foreign people.

NIEDZICA

Niedzica is a small village in Góry Pienińskie in southern Poland. Last spring me and my friends decided to go here for a weekend, to rest and to see beautiful landscapes. Niedzica is well known for the Dunajec dam, which was built a few years ago, and for its castle. Also the closeness to Slovakia and great ski runs make Niedzica a wonderfull place to visit. We stayed at a small hostel near Niedzica.
The weather was great all the time. The sun shone brightly, the wind blew gently and the trees bloomed. The water in the lake glittered and spurred to bathe. However, it was too cold. On the first day in Niedzica we wandered in the mountains.
We hiked Trzy Korony Mountain and admired glamourous views. We also saw a breakthrough of the Dunajec River. On the second day we decided to visit the mysterious castle in Niedzica. It was built in XIV century by the Hungarian house of Berzevichy. It changed its owner four times. The most interesting thing about the castle is the legend about a hidden treasure. We wanted to learn something about it, so we asked an old man, who worked there, to tell us the story. As we went for a meeting with him, we saw a road sign with a ghost on it. Our guide told us, that it warned against the meeting with the white lady, who scares every night in the castle. He told us the whole story.
Long ago the owner of the castle Sebastian Berzevichy went to South America. He settled in Peru and married an Indian woman. His wife gave birth to a daughter, whom they called Umina. She married a descendant of Inkas royal family, who kept the family treasure. When the war with the Spanish broke out, Sebastian's family moved to Europe, to Venice and next to Niedzica. One day someone murdered Umina in front of the castle's chapel. Her ghost began to appear every night. Sebastian hid the treasure in the castle or its neighbourhood and forbade to search it. In 1946 a document, which is the key to solve the puzzle was found, but till today no one has decode it. We listened to the story with interest. In the evening we still talked about the legend.
Our visit to Niedzica was a very interesting experience. We felt completely relaxed when we arrived home. You really ought to visit Niedzica as it offers entertainment for everyone.
