`Down Under' Comes Out On Top

(adapted from `The World of English' No. 1, 2004 (70))

The Winter Olympics. The domain of countries folded in snow and ice: Switzerland, Canada, Norway, Austria and Sweden. That's the usual story. They are the countries who win the gold medals and the silvers and the bronzes. Aren't they? Well, after the most recent games in Salt Lake City, you can now add a rather unusual new name to that list: Australia. Yes, the land of sand and surf and blue skies.

When Aussie Alissa Camplin won her gold medal in the ladies' freestyle skiing aerials event, millions watching her on TV around the world heard her scream, “I've won! I don't believe it! I've won” Her shock, despite her undoubted skills, was understandable. For her victory had secured Australia's third medal in the history of the Winter Olympic Games. Thrillingly though, one of those three, another gold, was also won at Salt Lake by Stephen Bradbury in short track speed skating.

But all of this is no surprise. In the past twenty years Australia has in some ways become a land of ice. For what else do you need to keep the champagne cool to celebrate all of their sporting success? The number of sports where Australia boasts world champions, both in individual and team events, is remarkable. Rugby Union, Rugby League, cricket and netball are a few.

So what has been the key? “It's the weather” says Luke Ellis. “We are an outdoor people. Surfing, football, rugby. It doesn't matter. With UK kids it's different. They stay indoors all the time.” Does this also explain the success in winter sports? “Yeah, that's funding and facilities. I've noticed that we have far more facilities at home compared to what you see in the UK. Our government put so much money into sport.” The government set to work and within five years had set up the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Nineteen years later at the Sydney Olympics Australia won fifty eight medals!

It's not just in sport where Australians are succeeding. In pop circles there is one Australian superstar whose star has never shone more brightly - Kylie Minogue. She's been awarded for the World's Best Selling Artist in the WMA in Monaco, Best International Female at the Brits, and she achieved a number three debut in the USA charts for her album Fever. This was the highest US chart position ever achieved by an Australian female.

Australian actress Nicole Kidman and, though born in New Zealand, Australian-bred actor Russell Crowe were both nominated for Oscar in March 2002. Kidman earned her first ever nomination for Best Actress for her role as the doomed Satine in the Australian film Moulin Rouge. Crowe was nominated for best actor for his performance in the film A Beautiful Mind.

So why are Australians becoming so high profile in the entertainment world as well as sport? Tracey Mair, director of TM Publicity says that the development of the present level of world class Australian film and television crews and actors and actresses has been underpinned by two decades of government financial support. However, she points out that it is only recently that a breakthrough has happened on the global stage. “A decade ago it was hard for Australians to break into Hollywood with our weird accent! But we have shown tenacity and confidence and got there.”

If confidence breeds confidence, then expect Australia's stars to rise even further.
