• Hydrogen gas produced during normal battery operation. This gas can explode if flames, sparks, or lighted to bacco are brought near the battery. When charging or using a battery in an enclosed space, always provide ventilation, and shield your face and eyes.
• Keep batteries out of reach of children. Batteries contain sulfuric acid. Avoid contact with skin or eyes. Also, shield your eyes when working near the battery to protect against possible splashing of the acid solution. In caseof acid contact with skin, eyes or clothing, flush immediately with water for a period of 15minutes and then get promptmedical attention. If acid is swallowed, call a physician immediately.
1. Terminal and cable (1) Check the tightness of the terminals to ensure good electrical connections. Clean the terminals and coat them with grease after tightening.
(2) Inspect for corroded or frayed battery cables.
(3) Check the rubber protector on the positive terminal for proper coverage.
2. Electrolyte Level (1) Check whether or not the electrolyte lever lies between the “UPPER LEVEL” and the “LOWER LEVEL” lines.
(2) If low, add distilled water until the “UPPER LEVEL” line is reached. Do not overfill.
3. Specific Gravity (1) Measure the specific gravity of each cell with a hydrometer.
(2) If the specific gravity reading is below standard, recharge the battery.
Standard gravity : 1.280 at 77°F(25°C)
(3) If the hydrometer readings for the highest and lowerest cells vary 0.05 or more, replace battery.
• Before performing maintenance or recharging the battery, the battery, turn off all accessories and stop the engine.
• The negative cable must be removed first and installed last.
• Set the battery in water when quick charging to prevent overheating the battery.
4. Quick Charging Remove the battery from the vehicle and remove the vent caps to perform a quick charge.
Basic Inspection 1. Check for corrosion on the battery posts and for loose and correded cable connections. If necessary, remove and clean/replace the cable clamps.
2. Reattach cables to the posts and tighten clamps.
3. Check that the electrolyte level is between the upper level and lovel marks on the side of the battery.
4. Add distilled water if necessary.
5. Check the specific gravity of the battery with a hydrometer.
Gravity : 1.27 - 1.29 (at 68°F[20°C])
