Holidays abroad are a treat that most people desire but not everybody can afford. They are a fantastic way of spending free time so every year more and more tourists decide to leave their own country and explore the unknown. However, travelling abroad is not a bed of roses and it does have certain drawbacks that people tend to foret about.

 

There is no denying that exotic holidays have a number of advantages. First of all, such a holiday often turns out to be a fascinating history or geography lesson. Secondly, you learn, or practise foreign languages as this is the only way to communicate with the locals. What is more, you often meet interesting people and make friends with them. As a result, you see the world from a new perspective.
Although travel broadens the mind, it does have some disadvantages. For instance, the price that you have to pay for even a short holiday is often exorbitant.

 

Another problem is your security abroad. Tropical diseases, political unrest or terrorist attacks are a few examples of situations that may spoil the best holiday. Furthermore, you run the risk of getting into trouble if you are not familiar with some local customs. The way you dress or gesticulate may be seen as rude or even obscene.

 

On balance, it seems that holidays abroad have as many disadvantages as positive aspects. The decision of whether to travel abroad or stay in your own country remains a matter of personal choice.

Many recent developments in genetic engineering and computer technology seem to suggest that the future of mankind depends on biologists, physicists, and mathematicians, and that the humanities are no longer so important. However, is true progress possible in world without philosophy, literature, art or music? I strongly believe that a prosperous and promising future for man does not lie only in the hands of scientists.

 

 

Firstly, technological advances always result in political and social changes, which lead to new ethical problems. So human functioning involves spheres beyond what can be measured, calculated and analysed chemically.

 

Secondly, the quality of life is affected by aesthetic pleasure, relationships with others, and finding answers to questions that have to do with happiness, aims of human existence and the like. Hard science may not be able to help much with that, whereas philosophy, literature and art can.

 

On the other hand, technological progress would not be possible without advances in scientific fields. Thanks to modern medicine, people live longer and certain fatal diseases have been elimintaed. Life is much more comfortable and enjoyable with fast cars, labour saving devices, 3-D movies and Jacuzzi.

 

While, undeniably, there will not be much progress without hard scientific research, those who write poetry, make films, compose music and investigate history also contribute greatly to the future of humanity. After all, the term “humanistic” comes from “human” and I strongly support the view that there will not be humanity without human sciences.
