means of mass transport. Each year millions of people cross countries

and continents on board of commercial and military airplanes. What

makes them so special? Do they have any flaws?

Planes are certainly one of the safest mean of transport. Although plane

crashes gather a lot of media attention and usually not many

passengers survive them, the accidents involving aeroplanes are quite

rare. Some people are afraid of flying because they are afraid they may

crash but many others choose planes for their safety. Another great

advantage of this type of travelling is the fact that planes are the fastest

mean of transport available. The journeys that in the past would take

weeks, for example going from Europe to North America, thanks to the

speed of aircrafts now take hours.

However, planes also have some disadvantages.

Environmentally-cautious people will certainly not choose the airplane

as their mean of transport. The machines are very harmful to the

environment. The reason for this is the fact that they need a lot of fuel to

complete their flights. Secondly, travelling by plane still remains

unaffordable for many people. Plane tickets tend to be expensive,

especially if you buy them during the holiday season. Although they are

generally a reliable mean of transport, they are susceptible to weather

conditions. In the case of heavy snow or thick fog, planes cannot take

off or land. The airports are then full of angry and tired passengers.

When the weather finally improves, the planes cannot all leave at the

same time and the people need to wait some more time for their turn to

take off. This can be very frustrating.

Flying is the most modern way to travel. It is fast and safe but at the

same time unavailable for some people and not very green. Still the

popularity of flying is rapidly growing.
