WhatinthehellwasIdoing?
Basically,IwasfreezingmyassofflookingforarunawaygirlinthemiddleofasnowstormonChristmas
Eve.Whatreallypissedmeoffwasthefactthatshewasaspoiledeighteen-year-oldfemalethatI’d
neverlikedinthefirstplace.
MynicknameforherwhenwewerekidshadbeenCruelladeVilforaslongasIcouldremember,andI
referredtoherbythatnamesooftenthatIalmostfailedtorememberthatherrealnamewasHarper
Lawson.ShewasthesecondyoungestmemberoftheLawsonfamily,friendsoftheColterfamilyforas
longasIcouldremember.
That’swhyI’moutherefreezingmyballsoffonChristmasEve.
TherewasverylittleIwouldn’tdoformymother.Butrightatthemoment,IwishedIdidn’tloveher
quitesomuch.
Ihadn’tseenHarperinyears,eventhoughshelivedinanothersmalltownfairlyclosetowherewedidin
RockySprings,Colorado.Iwasoncollegebreak,andHarperhadjustgraduatedfromhighschool.
Thankfully,MomhadstoppedtryingtopushafriendshipwiththeyoungerLawsongirlswhileIwasstill
ingradeschool,whenIfinallytoldherhowmuchIdislikedHarperbecauseshewasdownrightmean.
Heryoungersister,Danica,wasaheckofalotnicer,butIhadn’tseenmuchofher,either.Ihadruninto
theLawsonbrothersoccasionally,butbecausewewenttodifferentschools,webarelyknewanyof
them.
OnlyHarperhadeverirritatedthehelloutofme.Shehasalwaysgoneoutofherwaytobeachild
dictator,andsheflauntedherparents’wealthlikeitmadeherbetterthananyoneelse.Ithadn’tmattered
thattheColterswerewealthy,too.She’dbeenequalopportunitynastytoeverypersonshecameinto
contactwithwhenshewasakid.
Judgingbymycurrentfrigidtrekthroughthesnow,shehadn’tchangedonedamnbit.
Ismirkedasmyrubberbootsplowedthroughthedeepsnowdriftsonthesidewalk,findingithardto
believethatHarpermightactuallybeintheDenverhomelessshelterIwaslookingforinoneofthe
nastiestblizzardswe’dseeninalongtime.
Apparently,she’drunawayafterherparentshadfinallysettheirfootdownonherendlessspendingof
moneyshehadn’tearned.They’dtakenawayhercreditcards,herbrandnewcarshe’dgottenfor
graduation,andmostofherextravagantpurchasesbecauseshehadnodesiretogotocollege.Obviously,
shefiguredthatsinceherparentswererich,shedidn’tneedaneducation.
Fuck!Ihatedrichkidswiththatattitude.Ibustedmyassincollege,andnotasingleColterhadeverfelt
entitled.Wewerealleitherworkingonourcareers,orplanningourownfutures.Wehadalotofmoney,
butnotasingleoneofuseverconsideredjustbeingidle.
I’dheardtheolderLawsonbrotherswereallgoingtocollege.ButHarperapparentlydidn’twantto
workthathard.
OncetheLawsonshadrealizedhowincrediblyspoiledtheirdaughterwas,they’dfinallydecidedtocut
heroff.Harperhadimmediatelybalkedandrunawayfromhome.Well,technically,shewasn’ta
runaway.Shewaseighteen,soshewasn’tajuvenile.Butshesureashellactedlikeone.
Whointhehellranawayjustbecausemommyanddaddytookawayhercarandhercreditcards?
“She’sstillaspoiledbrat,”ImutteredirritablyasIkeptwalkingthroughthedriftingsnow,thecold
startingtowhiprightthroughmywinterjacketandjeans.“IfMomhadn’tbeensofreakedout,Iwould
havestayedwarmandcomfortableathome,celebratingChristmaswithmyownfamilyinsteadof
worryingaboutsomebodyelse’sproblems.”
Unfortunately,AileenColterworriedabouteverybody.MymotherwasoneofthemostcaringpeopleI
knew,andthegluethatheldourfamilytogetheraftermyfatherhaddiedyearsago.Shewasstillgood
friendswithHarper’smother,andwashorrifiedatthethoughtofayoungwomanlostsomewhereina
blizzardbyherself.
Iwasasucker.Thesadlookonmymother’sfacehadpromptedmetojumpintoahelicopterfromRocky
SpringstoDenverwithastormcomingin,justtofindsomeobnoxiouschickwhocouldn’tfunction
withoutherluxuryvehicleandcreditcards.
Ifinallylocatedthemakeshiftshelter,gratefulforthewarmthonceIsteppedinside.
Therewerebodieseverywhere,mostofthemonsleepingmatswithablanketonthefloor.Becauseofthe
weather,Iknewmostoftheshelterswereoverloaded.
Iscannedthepeopleonthefloor,someofthemsleeping,butmanysittingupwithablanketaroundtheir
body.
MyheartsankasIsawthepeopleintatteredclothing,andinhaledthestenchofunwashedbodies.
WasthisthebesttheycouldexpectonChristmasEve?Juststeppingintotheplaceremindedmeofhow
damnluckyI’dbeen.TheColterswereungodlywealthy,andbecausemyfatherhadalreadypassedaway,
thatwealthhadalreadybeendistributedtoallofhiskidsandmymother.
Attheripeoldageoftwenty-two,Iwasalreadyabillionaire,butI’dneverforamomentnotconsidered
working,orgettingacollegedegree.Mydadhadbeenaneducatedman,andIknewhe’dwantedthe
sameforallhischildren.Myidenticaltwinbrother,Marcus,hadtakenovermyfather’slegacy,whilethe
restofuswerebusyplanningourdestiniesbycontinuingontocollege.Marcushadittheworst,tryingto
gotoschoolandkeepupwithwhatwashappeningwithourDad’sinternationalbusinessinterests.I
knewassoonashegraduated,he’dbetravelingtheworld.
Anddamn…Iwasgoingtomisshim.

compassionate.
Themiddle-agedwomansmiledatme,asympatheticsmilethatIdidn’tdeserve.
“Noma’am,”Iansweredreassuringly,wantinghertoknowshedidn’thavetoputmeupforthenight.
“I’mlookingforsomeone.Idon’tneedtotakeuponeofyourbeds.”
Fumblinginmycoatpocket,IdrewoutthelatestpictureofHarper,hergraduationphoto.“Haveyouseen
her?”
Theladytookthepictureandexamineditclosely.“Looksalittlefamiliar.ButIcan’tquiteplaceher.
We’vetakeninalotofyoungpeople.”
Itookthephotoandputitbackinmypocket.“MindifIlookaroundalittle?”Jesus!Ihopedthetipthat
hadcomeinaboutHarperbeinginthisplacehadn’tbeenwrong.
Theoverworkedwomanshrugged.“Feelfreetosearchforyourfriend.I’dliketoseeonelesspersonbe
aloneonChristmas.”
Inodded,thenmademywayaroundthelargeroom,myeyesscanningallofthedesperatefacesoccupying
thespace.Finally,Ididadouble-takeononesolitaryfemale,almostdiscardingthenotionthatImightbe
lookingatHarper.
Theyoungwomanhadthesameblondehair,andwasprobablyaboutthesameage.Buteverythingelse
aboutherwas…wrong.Iedgedclosertoher,andherpositionsittingacrosstheroomagainsttheconcrete
wall,herarmswrappedaroundherbodylikeshewascold.
AsIapproached,Icouldtellshe’dbeencrying.“Harper?”Isaidhernameinaloudvoicefromseveral
feetaway,andsheimmediatelyturnedherheadtolookupatme.
Shefrownedandswipedawaytheremnantsofhertearsassheanswered,“Colter?”
Inodded,unabletolookawayfromthetorturedlookinherdarkgreeneyes,andthedespairIsawthere.
Christ!ItwasreallyHarper,butshelookednothinglikehersophisticatedpicture.Shewasinapairof
rattyjeansandasweaterratherthandesignerclothing.Shewaswearingnojewelry,noteventhe
diamondpendantortheringsIknewherparentshadn’ttakenaway.Andherangelicfacewascompletely
devoidofmakeup.Herblondehairhungdowntohershoulderswithanaturalcurlthatwasfarmore
attractivethantheupswept,sophisticatedstyleinherpicture.
Icrouchednexttoher.“I’mheretotakeyouhome.Yourfamilyhasbeenworriedsick.”
Sheshookherhead.“Ican’tgobackthere.”
“Youcan,”Isaidfirmly.“Problemis;wemayhavetostayinDenver.I’mnotsurewecangetbackto
RockySpringsinthisweather.Butatleastwecanvacatethisbedsosomebodyelsecanuseit.”
Sheslowlynodded,thenrosetoherfeet.“Thatwouldbegood.Somanypeopleareinneedofawarm
placetoberightnow.I’llgowithyou.”
Itookherhandsimplybecauseshelookedsodamnlost,andledhertowardthedooroftheshelter,giving
thewomanrunningitalargedonationbeforeIhauledHarperoutthedooraftersheretrievedajacketthat
wasn’tgoingtobenearlywarmenoughforthecurrentweather.
GuidingherafewblocksawaytothehotelroommybrotherMarcushadbeenabletoprocurebeforeI’d
startedsearchingforHarper,IsuddenlyrememberedithadbeentheonlyavailableroominDenver.
Becauseofthesnowstormandtheholidays,everythinghadbeenbookedsolid.
Onceweenteredtheroomofthesomewhatrundownhotel,Iinformedher,“We’llhavetoshare.This
wastheonlyavailableroomwecouldfind.”
Sheshrugged.“Itdoesn’tmatter.”
“Harper,everythingwillbeokay.Assoonasthehelicoptercanfly,we’llgetyoubackhome.”Ididn’t
likeher,butherdowntroddenmoodwasmakingmefeelalittlesorryforher.
“Mom,Dadandmyolderbrotherswillgivemehell,”shestatedflatly.“Theywantedmetogo.”
Eventhoughtheroomwaswarmenough,sheshuddered.
IstartedmakingapotofcoffeeasIanswered,“Theydidn’twantyoutogo.Theywantedyoutogrow
up.”
Thecoffeemakersputteredforamomentbeforeitstartedtobrew.Therewasn’tatonofstuffinthesmall
space.AsmallTVandthecoffeestuffwassittingonacheapbrownconsole,andtherewasaking-sized
bedwiththemostgodawful,gaudybedspreadI’deverseen.Otherthantwosmallbedsidetables,there
wasnootherfurnitureintheroomexceptforatiny,rickety-lookingtablewithtwoverywornwooden
chairs.
Iwasslightlyworriedaboutcheckingoutthebathroom.I’dcheckedinanddroppedmyduffelbag,then
headedoutalmostimmediatelytolookforHarper.Itookacautiousglancearoundthecorner.Itwasno
fancyhotelbathroom,butithadashowerandatoilet,andIwasrelievedwhenInoticedthatitlooked
fairlyclean.
Ipouredthecoffeewhenitwasdone,handingHarperoneofthemugs.“Here.Idon’tknowwhatyou
wantinit.”
“Thanks,”sheansweredquietly,thenproceededtodrinkitblackassheseatedherselfatthesmalltable.
“Howdidyougetropedintofindingme?Ialmostdidn’trecognizeyou.Ihaven’tseenyousincewe
werekids.”
Isatacrossfromher,satmymugonthetable,thenshruggedoutofmyjacketandsweptthehatfrommy
head.“Almosteverybodyintownwaslookingforyou.Yourparentswereafraidyouhadbeen
kidnappedorlostinthestorm.”
“I’msurprisedtheycared,”sheansweredmorosely.
Iopenedmymouthtoaskherifshethoughtthey’dstopcaringjustbecausetheytookawayhercredit
cards,andgiveheralectureaboutbeingaspoiledbrat.IcloseditagainwhenIsawtearsleakingfrom
herbeautiful,emeraldgreeneyes.
“Theycare,”Iansweredsimply,suddenlywantingtocomforther,whichwashighlyunusualformewhen
itcametoHarper.Mostly…Iwantedtoavoidher.
“IthinkIunderstandthatnow.Honestly,afterseeinghowbadlyotherpeoplearesuffering,Ifeellikea
majorbitchforleavingawarm,comfortablehome,”sheadmittedopenly.“Ideservedeverythingmy
parentsandbrotherssaidtome.”
“Haveyoubeenattheshelterthewholetime?”Iknewshe’dbeenmissingforseveraldays.
“Yes.ItookbusestoDenver,butIonlyhadasmallamountofcash.Thenthestormhit,andIhad
nowheretogo.”
Thesadnessinhervoicemademyheartclench.“Yourmomsaidyou’dstillhaveyourjewelryon.And
youwerelastseenwearingadesignerpantssuit.”
“Igavemyjewelrytoafamilywhogotturnedaway,”sheconfessedinahuskywhisper.“Theyhad
nothing,andtheyneededaplacetostay.Thelittleonewascold,soIgavehermyblanket.”
ItwasthelastthingIexpectedHarpertotellme,andIgapedatherinastonishment.Recoveringquickly,
Iasked,“Andyourclothing?”
“Silk,”sheansweredindisgust.“IwassocoldthatIwentthroughthedonationsattheshelterandfound
somethingwarmertowear.”
Ifrowned.“Harper,areyouokay?”
Shelookedupatmeandslowlyshookherhead.“I’veneverseenhowmanyhomelesspeoplethereare,
somanyfamiliesthatcan’tevenmanagetokeeptheirhomes.I’veneverevenbeentothispartofDenver.
It’sso…sad.”
“Soyougaveawayeverythingyouhadtohelpabigfamilysurvive?Youcouldhavepawnedthejewelry
yourself,”Isuggested,surprisedshehadn’tdonejustthat.
“Icouldn’t.Theyweregiftsfrommyparents.SoIdecidedtostayhereuntilIcouldfiguresomething
out.ButwhenImetthatfamily,andtheyweresodesperate,Icouldn’tletthemwalkawayintothecold
again.I’mhopingtheyfoundaroom.”
ShesoundedsodisheartenedthatIquicklyreplied,“I’msuretheydid.Thingsjuststartedtoget
completelyfilleduplastnight.”
Ididn’treallyknowthatforsure,buthowinthehellcouldIletherworryaboutwhetherornother
sacrificehadhelpedthefamilyfindaplace?JudgingbywhathermotherhadtoldmeaboutHarper’s
jewelry,itwouldhavefetchedenoughmoneyfortheirneedsforquitesometime.
IcouldstillhardlybelievethatHarper,theselfish,mean,spoiledchildI’doncebeenforcedtosocialize

“BecausebeforeIlandedinthatshelter,Ineverbotheredtolookaroundandseetherestofthepeople
aroundme.Igrewupinaprivilegedworld,andIstayedthere.Ithinkmyparentsdidmeafavor.When
Iseeallofthepeoplewhoactuallycareabouthomelessfamilies,andtheotherswhohavefallenonhard
times,IrealizewhatabitchI’vealwaysbeen.”
Hercandidexplanationandself-deprecationaffectedmeinawaythatmademyheartbleedfortheway
she’dsuddenlybeenthrustintoreality.Sure,maybeshehadneededtogrowup.Butshewasonly
eighteen,andafterbeingshelteredbyherparentsforsolong,thedesperationshe’dbeenwitnesstohadto
besoberingandtraumatic.
Insomeways,itwasherparents’fault,too.Mydadhaddiedyearsago,butmymomalwayskeptus

IlaidinbedwithHarper,wonderingifshewassleeping.Throughouttheevening,ithadgottenharder
andhardertoignoremyattractiontothenewandimprovedwomanI’dgottentoknowthisevening.
SinceitwasChristmasEve,I’dfinagledherintogoingouttoalocalpub,oneofthefewthatwereopen,
andjusthangingoutwithmeafterwe’dhaddinnerthere.She’dtoldmemoreaboutherexperiencewith
thehomeless,andhowscaredshewaswhenshe’dfoundherselfonherownwithnothingbuttheshelterto
keepherwarmandsafe.
Inturn,Ifoundmyselftalkingalotaboutmypast,sharingthingswithherthatIhadn’topenedupaboutfor
alongtime.
Ihadnodoubt—Harperhadchanged.I’dtoldherparentswhatIthoughtoverthephone,andthey’d
blamedthemselvesforsomeoftheproblemsbetweenthemandtheirdaughter.I’dalsocalledmyown

Shescootedcloser,andtomysurprise,sheswungonelegovermyhipsandclungtomelikeIwasher
shelterinthestorm.Herheadrestedonmychest,andherarmswrappedaroundmyshoulders,herbody
plasteredfull-lengthdownmyside.
Herlegwasjustnorthofoneveryharddick,andasIwrappedmyarmsaroundhershiveringbody,allI
fuckingwantedwastomakeherhappyagain.
