Problem
Service is aware of an issue, identified from the field, on the GSM V220/220i. Some
units, returned with customer complaints of  No Turn On or  No/Intermittent Main
Display were found to be caused by tearing of the display flex. Analysis revealed,
display flex tearing is either due to assembly or disassembly process issues. During
assembly process display flex pinched into a  Z shape between the XCVR Front
Housing and the PCB and during disassembly tearing is caused due to mishandling or
excessive outside force while repair. Display flex pinched issue due to assembly will be
a latent failure as traces crack over time and pressure. See Figures 1A, 1B for  Z
pinched flex during assembly issue and 2A, 2B during disassembly issue.

Solution
The following corrective actions have been implemented to resolve this issue.
1) For assembly issue, factory assembly instructions have been verified (July 05) to
make sure they are following the right procedure.
2) For Service Centers, Service manual for Assembly and Disassembly process has
been revised (August 05) to make sure the right process is being followed.
Caution: While disassembling the display flex from the front housing, make sure not
to stress or put excessive force while removing display flex. Stress or excessive
removal force may tear the display flex. Also, during service, be sure the flip
connector is disconnected anytime the main PCB is removed from the phone. Be
sure that this connector is properly reconnected only after the PCB is replaced into
the phone.
Field Service Action
Customer Returns:
When servicing any  No Turn On or  No/Intermittent Main Display GSM V220/220i
customer returns:
1. Power up the phone and verify the following symptoms: PCB current draw is
normal but the flip assembly does not power up (No Display).
a. If the unit PCB turns on and draws normal current but shows
no/intermittent Display symptoms then, disassemble the housing
b. Detach the Display Flex from the PCB Display connector, remove the PCB
and inspect for  Z crimp pinched flex or tear.
c. If the display flex has, a  Z crimp pinched flex or tear, then replace the
display flex with new known good flex.
2. Reassemble the unit, and verify that customer complaint is fixed
3. If the unit displays the original failure symptom after replacing the display flex,
then follow normal troubleshooting and repair techniques to repair the unit per
the customer complaint.
Call Center Action:
When responding to customer inquires on the GSM V220/220i products, with customer
complaints related to  No Turn On or  No/Intermittent Main Display , please direct the
customer to have their phone serviced per this FSB.
