1. Los Angeles
The subject of this week s lesson is the second biggest city in the United States,
Los Angeles.

How to use the lesson
1. Brainstorm on the subject of Los Angeles. You could perhaps touch on some of the
topics mentioned on Worksheet A.
2. Hand out Worksheet A, divide the students into pairs, and give them at least five
minutes to put the mixed-up pieces of information back together again. Note that in
purely grammatical terms there is more than one option in a couple of places, but
there is only one way of maintaining the sense of the text.
3. When the time is up, check answers in open class and ask students to read out their
sentences.
4. Hand out Worksheet B, and keeping the students in their pairs, allow them plenty
of time to find and correct the mistakes. Each piece of information contains two
mistakes. Point out that the mistakes are all grammatical or lexical, and that most
corrections only require the students to change a word. No correction requires them to
write more than one additional word.
5. Check answers in open class.
6. If you wish, finish by handing out copies of Worksheet C, which contains corrected
versions of all the pieces of information.
Answers (Exercises 1 and 2; corrections for Exercise 2 in bold)
1. Los Angeles, or L.A. for short, is the second largest city in the United States, after
New York, and the largest in the state of California.
2. Hollywood, a district of Los Angeles, is of course famous because of the American
film industry.
3. The city is home to people from all over the world, who together speak more than
200 different languages.
4. One of the most important parts of the Los Angeles economy is the entertainment
industry, which includes the production of films, TV programmes and video games.

5. The film studios of Hollywood have produced many famous films, although now
some of the most important studios are in other places in California.
6. Los Angeles has important sports teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers
(baseball), the Los Angeles Lakers (basketball) and Los Angeles Galaxy (football, or
 soccer as people call it in the United States).
7. One of the most famous footballers in the world, the English player David
Beckham, went to play for Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007.
8. The climate of Los Angeles is similar to that of the countries around the
Mediterranean sea in southern Europe, with sunshine on more than 250 days per year
and less rain than many other parts of the United States.
9. One of the most famous landmarks in Los Angeles is the huge  Hollywood sign
in the Hollywood Hills. The sign is made from white letters, each about fifteen metres
high.
10. The city grew very quickly during the twentieth century. Around 13 million
people now live in the Los Angeles region, but in 1900 the population was less than a
million.
