the Transalp is a dream. It takes between five and ten
days to cross it by mountain or racing bike, depending
on your route and level of fitness, and it is a fascinating
combination of exploring the fascinating nature and one's
own boundaries. The Transalp, or Alpencross, is usually
followed from north to and south and includes numerous
mountain passes. The first mountain bike crossing was
probably that planned by mountain guide Andi Heckmair
in 1989, which is why the route from Oberstdorf in the
Allgäu to Riva on Lake Garda is today known as the
Heckmair route.

The contents of a first aid kit depend on the type of
trip it is or the kind of injuries that could be sustained.

Basic, the "first aid ABC" with basic medical supplies,

outdoors. So even though there may still be a mishap,
at least you'll be prepared for it. More information

Anyone who has learnt to appreciate the alpine world from a mountain bike and faced up to the challenge will continue
to seek out its magic. The size of the challenge depends on the route. The Alpencross can be followed directly, or through
countless Alpine passes from side valleys, or follow a main valley so that only a few passes need to be crossed. What counts
is not the kilometres travelled, but the altitude. The "Via Claudia Augusta" for instance, where Hannibal once tried his luck,
can follow one of two routes of vastly different levels of difficulty and between 3857 and 20,293 metres of altitude.
Popular Alpencross routes include those from Lower Bavaria or Upper Austria via the Enns and Drau valleys to Slovenia;
from Upper Bavaria via the North and South Tyrol to Lake Garda; from Lake Constance via Grisons into Lombardy; from
Lucerne via St. Gotthard or Simplon to the Lago Maggiore, and from Lake Geneva to the Aosta valley or from Chambéry or
Grenoble via Frejus to Torino.
And even though alpine tours are normally undertaken in small groups, you can often find yourself on your own for great
stretches. With this in mind, it is essential that you are properly prepared, both with regard to the route and safety. By that
we don't just mean helmets, but first aid as well. Essential if the nearest doctor's surgery is more than 200 km away. That's
why TATONKA has a variety of first aid bags in its range  some of which are equipped for special purposes, others without
contents for you to equip yourself.
