Dear Sir or Madam,

I am the secretary of the International Friendship Club, here in Perth. We would like to book 15 seats for Macbeth here on Saturday, 16th May.

I understand that we may pay in dollars on the night of the performance and that the charge for a group will be the equivalent of Ł6 per person. Could you confirm that we will get the group discount if we do not pay in advance?

Please could you also let me know what time the play end (I believe it starts at 8 pm)?

Thank you for your help.

Yours sincerely,

Jane Brown

Dear Mr and Mrs Andersen

I am writing on behalf of the Club committee to explain the decision not to buy tickets for your children for Macbet. We're sorry that you're annoyed by this. We know that your children speak very good English, but we believe that this production is really only for adults. It shows very realistic violence and the special effects are used in a scene which is said to be genuinely frightening.

We hope you are not too disappointed and that the children will continue to enjoy our events for younger members, such as the fancy Dress Party next weekend.

With best wishes,

Jane Brown

Dear Sam,

I've written to Acme Productions to book 15 seats and checked about price etc. as you asked. I've also written to the Andersens, which was pretty difficult actually. Let's hope they accept our decision now. I'll let you have a copy of my letter when we meet.

All the best,

Jane

Many people say that the best way to learn English is to go to England. Being with people who do not speak your language forces you to use English to communicate and many students find that this is the best way to gain confidence. However, there are two disadvantages. First, it is very expensive. Second, it can be quite lonely especially if you know very little English. If you are not used to looking after yourself, this may not be the way for you.

In my opinion, the most important aspect of language learning is the relationship between the student and the teacher. If the student trusts the teacher and is willing to work hard, he or she will learn a lot. At my last school, I had little faith in my teachers, because they were poorly trained and simply followed the exercises in a course book. Now I go to a school where the teachers make us want to work because the classes are so interesting, we have lots of homework and sometimes it's quite hard, but it's fun as well, so we don't mind.

I already use my English to enjoy films and rock music and to talk to foreign visitors to my country. I enjoy these conversations and I think they are just as useful as expensive private lessons. My advice to anyone who wants to learn a foreign language is to find a class with a teacher who motivates you - and then enjoy yourself!

Dear Sara,

We were really sorry you couldn't come with us. I do hope you're not too bored, sitting at home with your leg in plaster. You certainly didn't miss any fun on the journey. There were terrible traffic jams, which meant we spent hours looking at the back of the car in front. Then, when we did move, we missed the turning off the motorway -that was Paulina's fault, she can't read a map properly and she wouldn't let me help. We were extremely late getting to the cottage and the owner had been waiting to let us in and was very angry.

It is a lovely place though! We can see the sea from the garden and the countryside is very pretty. The weather has been quite good - up to today, anyway. At the moment there is a storm with gale force winds and icy rain! This explains how I have time to write such a long letter.

We plan to go sightseeing tomorrow round some of the ancient ruins. And we're going to eat out in a restaurant to give us a break from Alan's cooking, which is terrible. Even worse than mine!

Apart from that we're OK. I do miss you though. I won't come away with Alan and Paulina again without you. They argue almost all the time, which makes me so tense. If I could get another week off, would you like us to go somewhere on our own at the end of the summer?

Lots of love,

Laurie
