Track 11, Progress Test 3, Listening: Part 1

1

Hi! My name is Rebecca Hall. I'm a 26-year-old designer. I have created some interesting new jewellery. I've just won an international design award and I've had a lot of interest in my jewellery designs from the fashion world. Shopping centres in Manchester are interested in selling cheaper, smaller versions of my jewellery.

2

Hello. My name is Hugh Granger. I want to publish Wonderland a new luxury magazine for both men and women between the ages of 25 and 45. The magazine will contain articles on art, film and music. There will be six issues of the magazine every year and it will be beautifully designed.

3

My name is Juliet Jones. I've invented a shower for pets. Some people think it is a ridiculous idea, but my pet shower has won two awards. It is fantastic for people with dirty, smelly dogs. At only £25, it's an unmissable opportunity for all dog owners.

Track 12, Progress Test 3, Listening: Part 2

P: Good afternoon. With me this afternoon is Bob Evans. Bob works for NASA and he was one of four astronauts that recently took a twelve-day trip in the new spaceship, Alpha 34. Alpha 34 has been built to carry space tourists, isn't that right, Bob?

B: Yes, it is. The spaceship has a crew of four, and can carry as many as ten space tourists. They could stay at a space station for a one or even a two-week space holiday.

P: That's amazing. Many people will find the idea of blasting off in a rocket quite frightening. Is it dangerous?

B: Well, blast off is noisy, and a bit risky. It's like sitting on top of a bomb, I suppose. But, no, not really. Of course, things can go wrong in space. But in fact it's no more dangerous than crossing a busy road.

P: What will life in the spaceship be like? Will the space tourists be able to eat in a space restaurant, for example?

B: Well, not exactly, no. Most of the food we eat in space is in packets and is ready to eat. The food is mixed with water because there are no cooking facilities on board. The meals we eat in space are planned by experts to give a good balanced diet.

P: I see. How about the sleeping arrangements? Will the space tourists be able to get a good night's sleep?

B: Well, the sleeping conditions on a spaceship are fairly comfortable. Astronauts usually share a bed and take it in turns to sleep. The sleeping arrangements will be very different if the spaceship has members of the public on board. I imagine each space tourist will have their own bed.

P: And finally Bob, what will the space tourists do in their free time?

B: Well, when astronauts are not working we read a lot. We have a digital camera with us, so sometimes we make videos for our families. We even try to do some exercises, but this is difficult because we don't have much space to move. I imagine life on board will be similar for space tourists, too.

P: Well, it's been very interesting talking to you, Bob. Thank you very much for joining me today.

B: You're welcome.
