QUANTITY
A/ONE
We can use a/an or one when talking about one of something:
Would you like a coffee?
I would like one piece of cake.
UWAGA We use one when we want to specify that number and not any other number. We use a in a more general way:
I would like one piece of cake = not two or three.
I would like a piece of cake = generally-speaking, a piece of cake.
MUCH
We use much with uncountable nouns in questions and negatives:
Have we got much rice?
I haven't got much coffee.
MANY
We use many with countable nouns in questions and negatives:
How many friends have you got?
I didn't see many people at the concert.
SOME
Some is used with countable and uncountable nouns in positive sentences, questions, requests and offers:
I've got some ice-cream if you like it.
Have you got some more milk?
Would you like some help?
Could you give me some information?
UWAGA We could say would you like some coffee ( = coffee as a drink) or would you like a coffee ( = a cup of coffee)
ANY
We use any with countable and uncountable nouns in questions and negatives:
Have you got any milk?
I haven't got any milk.
Did you see any good programmes on TV last night.
UWAGA Sometimes it is possible to use both many and any but with a difference in meaning:
I didn't eat many cakes = I ate some, but a small number.
I didn't eat any cakes = I ate no cakes.
A FEW
We use a few with countable nouns. It means "a small number of":
I know a few people in Russia.
Could I talk to you for a few minutes.
UWAGA Do not confuse a few with few. Few also means "a small number of", but with a negative meaning like "not enough:
I have got a few friends = a small number; I am happy.
I have few friends = a small number; not enough; I am not so happy.
A LITTLE
We use a little with uncountable nouns:
Could you give me a little milk?
I borrowed a little rice from John.
A LOT/LOTS OF
We use these phrases with countable and uncountable nouns and with negatives and questions:
He's got lots of friends.
I ate a lot of ice-cream and felt sick.
Are there lots of students at your school?
I don't like to eat a lot of rice.
