  3. Objective: The aim of the lesson is to introduce writing linkers and provide practice in using them.

Warm up checking homework

-“Good morning students! Sit down, please. Now I’d like to check the list.” And she opens the class register and read aloud the names.

-“As far as I know, you have a lot of homework to check. So, please open your activity books at page 14. And we will check the exercises. I’d like one of you to start reading the answers.” – the T checks all 10 exercises, asks to translate certain words or whole parts of the text.

15 min - Ss may be unprepared. Then the T gives them unsatisfactory marks because they had two weeks to do the homework. - A lot of Ss have not done the homework again.
Controlled practice reading aloud - “Before we will start discussing our today’s topic, I’d like you to revise the story from your previous meeting. So open the books at page 22. Are there any volunteers to read ?” – if there are not any volunteers, the T will choose the Ss.

4 min - Ss may not want to read aloud. - Ss are eager to read.
Presentation writing linkers “ Now I’d like you to look at exercise 4. Here you can see a table with writing linkers. Look at them and, please, tell me which two words or phrases have a similar meaning? “ – the T waits for the answer After that and then mean the same. At the same time and meanwhile mean the same. Then the T translates the words and phrases.

4 min - Ss may not see the similar phrases. - Ss find the similar phrases.
Controlled practice choosing correct writing linker “Now we are going to do exercise 5. Here you can see next part of our crime story. And your task is to circle the correct writing linker. I advise you to read first the whole sentence and even the previous one, and then try to choose the right phrase. So, please start reading.” –the T chooses Ss to read fragments of the text, she helps them if necessary.

6 min - Ss may have problems in deciding which writing linker is correct. - There are not many problems with this exercise.
Controlled practice discussion

-“Please look at exercise 6. You can see here four pictures and you have to reorder them to make next part of the story. At first, I’d like you to tell me what you can see in the pictures.” – the T asks Ss and helps them creating answers, if necessary.

-“Now, tell me, what happened ?” – the T wants Ss to tell her what happened next in their own words.

- Ss may have problems with description of the pictures.

- Ss may be unwilling to talk.

- Ss need help with words such as: ‘forest’ ‘hut’ ‘rope’ ‘broken glass’.

- Ss find it hard to give their opinions.

Controlled practice listening -“Now we will listen to the recording and you will hear what really happened. I’d like you to number the pictures in a sequence of events in a story.” – the T plays the recording twice. Then asks about the right order of the pictures.

3 min - Ss do the task properly.
Free practice speaking – work in pairs “Please, take a look at exercise 8. I’d like you to work in pairs. Think about what can happen next in the story . Discuss in pairs the possible end of the story. Use questions from this exercise to create your own ending. You’ve got 5 minutes.” – after the time given –“I hope you have some ideas how to end this story, because it is connected with your homework.”

5 min - Ss may start using Polish instead of English. - They seem not really interested in creating the end.
Termination

“As I said, your homework is to write the end of the story. It should be about ten sentences long and in past simple and past continuous tenses. And you have to remember to use writing linkers.”

“That’s all for this lesson. We will meet after the pause.”
