Chocolate treats could be 33 per cent dearer by Christmas.
A rise in the price of cocoa butter and other costs could add as much as 21p to every 100g of milk chocolate. Experts say this could spell an inflation-busting rise in everything from advent calendars and chocolate gift packs to everyday indulgences. The cost of producing chocolate rose by 33 per cent in the last year, mainly as a result of a 70 per cent rise in the price of cocoa butter and big increases in the prices of milk and whey powder. So far, only some of the rising costs have been passed on by some chocolate makers, from 7.5 per cent on a bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk to 14.3 per cent on a box of Quality Street. But with the peak time of year approaching, there may be more price rises to come ahead of the Christmas rush. Analysts for trade journal The Grocer said prices of cocoa butter are currently at a four-year high of £4,000 a tonne after bad weather hit the cocoa bean crop in the Ivory Coast. ‘Rising cocoa butter prices and inflation on other key ingredients have taken their toll on chocolate manufacturers,’ said Mintec analyst Liliana Gonzalez. Chocolate maker Thorntons has put prices up by an average of 11.5 per cent in the last 12 months. However, the price of a box of Celebrations is currently the same as this time last year and a box of Roses is only 1.3 per cent higher.

By Christmas the prices of some Britain’s favourite chocolate boxes are about to increase by 33 per cent. The growing cost of chocolate production is a result of the rise in the price of cocoa butter, milk and whey (serwatka). Experts said the prices of cocoa butter went up due to the bad weather conditions hitting the cocoa bean crop in the Ivory Coast. So far, only few chocolate makers have been affected. Some prices of brands such as a box of Quality Street has gone up even to 14.3 per cent. Other chocolate treats stayed at the same or slightly higher price.
