Adobe Photoshop 5.0
Pentium or higher computer with 16MB of RAM.
KPT 3.02 from Metacreations.
Load the KewlPack #1 Action Set with the Actions palette, and run in button mode only.
Import the Carvium presets into KPT GD (use “–” (minus sign) and “import” button in the GD).
Copy the UnCarvium Lighting Effects preset into the “plug–ins\filters\lighting styles” directory.
Follow onscreen instructions.
This Action works best if you can do the following:
Create an RGB file. Any size is fine—although it is always best to start about twice the final size or at least 200hx600w—when you reduce it down, the image will be sharper. Resolution should be 72ppi for best results.
Create a new type layer with your black text – Normal weight Serif type seems to look best overall (Minion, Fritz Q, Times New Roman, etc.).
The size of the type should be moderately large in comparison to the image area. Leave approximately 50 pixels or more around effect area.
Select a photograph (or create a background) which is not too busy (soft noise or marblish), not too high in contrast—a fine texture works best! The distortions and chamfering of the Action will not be as discernable if there is too much detail. Place this image on the Background layer.
When it asks for the KPT GD:
You must use the KPT GD to get the right effect. Use the Carvium Preset and apply.
Don’t worry if it all looks black in the preview—the needed variations are applied.
UnCarvium will create one file on your hard drive. “uncarviumEffect.PSD.” It will be in the “c:\” directory.
Once created, save the image, rename it and move it wherever you prefer. Lighten or Gaussian Blur the background for an even more dramatic effect.
