Why do I need SplitJoin?:

It can be difficult to transfer large files between computers when using floppy disks or email. Files that are larger than 1.4Mb won't fit on a standard floppy disk and many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) limit the size of email file attachments, often to as little as 1Mb.

The solution to this problem is to break large files into smaller parts for transfer, then reassemble the parts into a copy of the original file once they have reached their destination.

SplitJoin is a utility for splitting and rejoining files. It requires no installation so it can be run from any folder. As it is very small, SplitJoin can easily 'travel' with the file parts and be used to rejoin them.

Splitting files:

Open SplitJoin. Enter the name of the file to be split and the name of the folder to which the file parts are to be copied in the designated edit windows. The default part size is 1440kb (the size of an empty floppy disk) but this can be changed, with a minimum of 120Kb. Once a file has been selected, the number of file parts is calculated and displayed.

If a copy of SplitJoin is needed to 'travel' with the file parts, check 'Make copy of SplitJoin'.

Click the 'OK' button to make the file parts. The file parts created will have the extensions *.001, *.002 etc. An additional file with the extension *.999 will also be created. This contains a Checksum (a number which acts like a fingerprint) of the original file. When the files are rejoined, the Checksums of the original and rejoined files are compared to make sure they match. This check is done because it is not uncommon for file parts to become corrupted while being copied, especially to floppy disks.

Joining Files:

Open SplitJoin. Any file parts in the same folder as SplitJoin will be listed automatically in the 'Files to join' listbox. To join files stored in another folder, select the 'Join' tab, click the 'Browse' button and enter the name of any one of the file parts in the 'Open File' dialog. SplitJoin will find and list all related file parts copied to the same folder. Once the file parts are listed, enter the name of the file to be created in the 'Save as' edit window and click 'OK'. The joined file will retain the date and time of the original file.

SplitJoin can also join files which have been split by other programs as long as the parts have numbered filenames. The position of the numbers within the filenames is not important.
