Peter and John go to a restaurant for dinner. Th< both order steak. The waiter serves them. When Peterl grabs the bigger steak, John says to him angrily: “What bad manners you have! You helped youi first and you took the bigger piece.”

Peter answers:

“lf you had been in my place, which would you have1 taken?”

“The smaller one, of course.”

“Then what are you complaining about? You have it, don’t you?”

Foi o primeiro a se servir (servir-se) “You were the first in serving himself.”

Se voce estivesse em (no) meu lugar_t qual teria tirado? “lf you had been in my place, which would you have taken?” Estivesse is the imperfect subjunctive of estar to be (see item 1, section 31 of grammar summary, and item 3, section 34 of grammar summary). Terra tirado is the perfect conditional of tirar to take (see item 3, section 33 of the grammar summary).

—N5o acha—perguntou perplexo,—que estó pedindo (estó a pedir um) excessivo ordenado em vista da sua pouca experiencia?

—Pelo contrńrio—respondeu o pretendente,—um trabalho do qual nao se sabe absolutamente nada ć mais dificil e deve merecer um pagamento melhor.

The head of an important firm, looking at an appli-cation, is astonished on noticing that the applicant for the position, although lacking experience, is asking for an excessive salary.
