FUN CHILDRENTS MITTENS



Thcsc brightly colourcd mittens with their animnl faccs arc fun to knit and introduce the tcchniquc of circular knitting using a set of double-pointed needles (see page 50). The faces are knitted and embroidered separately and stitched on to the backs of the mittens in pairs (see page 85).

Mittens measure 3'A (4]in (9 [I0]cm) across palm and are 5 [5l4]m (12.5 [I4]cm) long

Set of 4 size 3 (3.25mm/UKIO) double-pointed needles Set of 4 size 6 (4mm/UK8) double-pointed needles

Gauge (Tension)

22 sts and 28 rows to 4in (lOcm) measured over stockinette (stockmg) stitch on size 6 (4mm/UK8) needles

TIGER MITTENS

Using size 3 (3.2Smrn/UK 10) needles nnd MC. east on 30(36) sts and divide betwcen 3 needles.

Round 4 K 14(17). Ml. k4. Ml. k 14(17). Knit 2 rounds straight.

Round 7 K 14(17). Ml. k6. Ml. k!4(l7|. Knit 2 rounds straight.

Round 10 K 14(17). Ml. k8. Ml. kl4|l7). Knit 2 rounds straight.

Round 13 K 14(17). slip next 10 sts on to st holder. east on 2 sts. k to end. 30( 36) sts. Knit 8(12) rows straight.

SHAPETOP

Dcc round (K4. k2tog) *>I6) tintes.

Knit 2 rounds straight.

Dcc round (K3. k2tog) 6(6) limes.

Knit 2 rounds straight.

Dcc round (K2. k2tog) S(6) limes.

Bind (east) ofT rem 16(18) sts.

THUMB

Slip 10 sts front stitch holder on to 3 needles. rejoin yarn and klO tlicn piek up and k 2 sts front tliose Itound (east) off previously. 12 sts.

Knit 7(9) rounds straight.

Dcc round (Kl. k2tog) 4 limes.

Dcc round (K2tog) 4 tintes.

Cul yarn. thread ihrough rent 4 sts and puli up.

FACE (MAKE I FOR EACH MITTEN)

tJsing 2 size ) (3.26mm/UKlO) neetlles and B. east on 9(ll| sts. Tum the work at the end ofcach row for Hat knitting. Working in st st. starting with a k row. inc I st at each end of 2nd and foli 2 rows. 16(17) sts.

Work 4(6) rows without shaping.

Dcc I st at each end of next 3 rows.

Bind (east) off.

EYES (MAKE 2 FOR EACH MITTEN)

Using 2 size 3 (3.26nim/UKlO) needles and A. east on 2 sts.

Cont in st st. staning with a k row. inc 1 st at each end of next row.

Work 2 rows.

Dec I st at each end of ncxt row.

NOSE (MAKE I FOR EACH MITTEN)

Using 2 size 3 (3.26ntm/UKlO) needles and pink. east on 3 sts.

OUTER EARS (MAKE 2 FOR EACH MITTEN)

Using 2 size 3 (3.26mm/UKIO) neetlles and MC. east on 10 sts.

Knit 2 rows.

Cont in g st. dcc I st at each end of next and cvcry foli alt row to 2 sts.

K2tog. cut yarn and puli through rem st. INNER EARS (MAKE 2 FOR EACH MITTEN) Using 2 size 3 (3.26mm/UKlO) needles and B. east on 6 sts.

I* 1 row.

Cont in st st. staning willi a k row. dcc I st at each end of next and foli alt row. Work I row.

K2tog. cut yarn nnd puli through rem st.

FINISHING_

Scw nose on face. matching hintl (east) off ctlges. Using black. and referring to the picturc. backstilch the moutli and usc long straight stitehes for the whiskers.

Sew the face on to the mitten. Sew the cycs on to the mitten abovc the face. Sewille inner car to the outer car. matching east on edges and puints. Sew the ears eitlicr sidc of the mitten at the top.
