Matching gauges (tensions)
Horizontal darts can also be worked in short rows to add shape to a garment. Work from the stde edge to the tip of the dart and tum. then work back to three or four stitches from the side edge. Continue m this way. workjng three or four stitches further from the side seam each time until the dart is the required depth. Then work across all stitches.
Shoulder shaping can also be done using short rows. Bindmg (casting) off the stitches produces a stepped edge.
Instead. tum the work before the stitches that are to be bound (cast) off. Repeat this on each bind (cast) off row.You will then have all the stitches still on the needle to bind (cast) off in one go or to join the shoulder seam by the three-needle seam bind (cast) off method (see page 25).
Matching gauges (tensions) Short rows are also useful when knitting together two stitch pattems with different row gauges (tensions). For example. a garter strtch front border on a stockinette (stocking) stitch cardigan. You need to work six rows of garter stitch for every four rows of stockinette (stocking) stitch. Finish the row at the end of the garter stitch. tum and knit the garter stitches. tum and knit back across them. Then work across all stitches of the garment.
