Joumeys to Polcind (Podróże do Polski) are a collection of memories, included in the form of poetic essays, written by a Polish writer and poet Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, from his visits in various places in Poland: Warsaw, Cracow, Poznań. Łódź, Lublin and Sandomierz. There are also observations from the province. Iwaszkiewicz visited these places in various periods of his life, before the First World War. then in the Interwar period, and the next time in the 1950s. 60s. ending in the 1970s. The writer in the introduction to the First edition of this book claimed that the publicalion of this book dictated the desire to integrale the individual travel reports in order to, as he wrote: “my numerous trips across Poland, numerous contacts with the face of this land and my acquaintance - probably not superficial - of the Polish landscape and customs, Polish yesterday and today. include in one composition. creating this landscape. which always invariably. despite my advanced age, draws on. what is charming this face of my land, seemingly inaccessible and unimportant, and concealing so much contcnt and so much beauty” (J. Iwaszkiewicz, Joumeys to Poland, Poznań p. 7). Undoubtcdly, traveling to Poland, shaped the crcative and idcological attitude of the poet, coming from Ukrainę, brought up in Polish, Ukrainian and Russian culture, gifted with the extraordinary sensitivity of perceiving the world around him and the emotionality of its experiencing. It was confirmed in this way of experiencing the image of the homeland and it allowed him to reach its essence. That is why the title of the volume turns out to be so important. As it appeared, it is not about the journey itself as an inalienable element of human life in a cognitive or cxistential sense, that is, a journey “across” Poland, only a trip “to” Poland. A volumc of these essays was composed around this formulation. Therefore, you can cali it “Polish” text. It presents the geopolitical (the term of Kennth White) attitude to time and space. history and people. These descriptions are very personal. They provoke not only reflection on the places they look at. but also to tell stories about people who have left, about family, friends and places, close to the writer, hidden in the darkness of oblivion.
