MEASURES OF MIGRATION FLOWS BETWEEN LOCALITIES GROUPED
ACCORDING TO THEIR SIZE
The author presents his own conception of measures expressing internal flows of population; the proposed measures characterize the regularities in the flows between localities grouped according to the number of their inhabitants. The measures are based upon the elements of the matrix of migration flows included in Table 1. The first three measures characterize the share of certain transfers in the total of population transfers, namely: the first one [Wi-j(t)] refers to transfers between the groups of localities of the same size, the second [Wj>i/(t)] — the those from the lower to the higher groups and the third [Wi. j(t)] — from the higher to the lower groups. The next two measures represent the ratio between transfers from the lower to the higher groups and those from the higher to the lower groups [Wj > i/i < j(t)] and the share of transfers from the lower to the higher groups in the total of transfers between the various size groups of localities (Wj>ł9fc^/t/). The subseąuent measures are properly speaking a seąuence of measures characte-rizing the share of transfers by r classes of the size groups of localities higher up
in the linę or by r classes of the size groups of localities lower in
the linę The proposed measures were tested in an analysis of migra-
tions between the size groups of localities in Czechoslovakia, German Democratic Republic and Poland (only between the size groups of towns). The data on which the calculations of the described measures were based are shown in Table 2 for Czechoslovakia, Table 3 for the GDR, and Table 4 for Poland. The measures calculated for the years for which the statistical data were available are presented in Tables 5, 6 and 7 respectively for the three above countries.
