In Junc 1950 thc Committcc of thc International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering received from Unesco an in-vitation to send dclegates to a confercncc to be held from 9 to 13 October 1950 at the headquarters of Unesco in Paris.

At this confcrence the problems of closer co-operation between the International Societies in the diflerent fields of engineering and thc ways and means for facilitating their functions were to be dis-cussed.

This invitation was accepted and for our organization the follow-ing delegation took part in the above mentioned confcrence:

Prof. Dr. Donald W. Taylor, Sccrctary of thc International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering;

W. K. Wallace, Chairman of the British Scction;

W. C. van Mierlo, Secretary-Treasurer of the Dutch Section, formerly Treasurer of thc 2nd International Conference 1948 Rotterdam.

According to Chapter I of thc constitution the main objeets of thc Union of International Engineering Organizations shall be:

(а)    to co-ordinate, by common agreement, the activities of the mem-ber organizations, and in particular thc programmes and the dates of international congresses;

(б)    to takc all uscful steps for thc morał and materiał support of the member organizations;

(c)    to receive proposals and to make recommendations thereon with a view to helping the formation of new international organizations in fields not effectively covered by existing organizations;

(d)    to further mutually hclpful rclations among the member organizations and with similar organizations and also relations between the member organizations, thc UN and their Spccializcd Agcncics.

For the sake of complcteness it was mentioned that the following International Engineering Organizations had sent their delegates:

siste a fournir des informations aux diflerentes societes natio-nales, ceci a Faide de lettres circulaires, redigees au moins deux fois par an. Pour commencer 18 pays ont contribue par des Communications, ils ont ete joints tout d’abord par le Dane-mark et lTtalie, et par 5 societes nationales, la Belgiąue, la France, le Portugal, la Pologne et la Turquie, par Linde plus tard, ce qui porte k 26, le nombre des societes prenant une part active dans ce service d’information.

Les finances de TOrganisation sont saines; Factif de notre Societe etant de S 1075.45. Cette somme resulte des cotisations annuelles des comites nationaux, c’est-a-dire $ 15.— par co-mite. Ces derniers cncaissent une cotisation annuelle de 25 cents par membre individuel. Par ailleurs, 1*Unesco a accorde une somme de $ 500.— a des fins de publications et pour la redac-tion du dictionnaire. Une listę des societes membres et de leurs cotisations pourra ćtre consultće a la fin de cette seance.

M. van Mierlo presente son rapport sur Pactivite de la Societe depuis 1948 en collaboration avec 1’Unesco et 1’U.A.T.I.

En juin 1950 le Comite de la Societe Internationale de mecanique des sols et des travaux de fondations a ete prie par 1'Uncsco d’en-voycr des dćlegućs a une assemblee devant se tenir du 9 au 13 octobre au sićge de 1’Unesco a Paris.

Cette assemblee etait convoquee aux fins de discuter la possibilite de resserrer la collaboration entre les Socićtćs Internationales dans les difTerents domaines de la technique ainsi que la marche a suivre et les mesures a prendrc pour arriver k ce but.

Cette invitation a ete acceptee et une delegation comprenant les personnes suivantes a rcprćscnte notre Societe k 1’assemblee men-tionnee plus haut:

Prof. D. W. Taylor, Secretaire de la Societe internationale de mćca-nique des sols et des travaux de fondations;

M. W. K. Wallace, President de la Section britannique;

M. W. C. van Mierlo, Secretaire-Tresorier de la Section hollandaise, ex-tresorier du Deuxićme Congrós international de Rotterdam. En verlu du chapitre I des statuts, les buts principaux de 1’Union des Associations Techniques Internationales consistent k:

a)    coordonner d’un commun accord les activites des associations adherentes et notamment les programmes et les dates des Congrćs Internationaux;

b)    prendre toutes mesures utiles afin d’aider moralement et matć-riellement les organisations adherentes;

c)    recevoir des propositions et faire des recommandations en vue d’aider k la formation dc nouvelles organisations internationales en des domaines insuffisamment representćs par les associations existantes;

d)    developper des rclations d’assistance mutuelle entre les associations adherentes et avec d’autres associations similaires ainsi que les relations entre les organisations specialisees.
